They are interpreted in terms of hydrogen bond formation, electrostatic interactions and desolvation effects. The electrochemical behavior of the anion in the Fe-containing complex is studied by cyclic voltammetry. The stability constant of the monooxidized species is determined. To investigate the influence of the electrostatic interaction, the compound (V) is prepared, which contains only quaternary N atoms, thus preventing the formation of hydrogen bonds in complexes. The complex (VII), formed from (V), crystallizes in P1 with Z=2. The interaction between cation and anions is purely electrostatic and its strength is indicated by several close contacts between C atoms of the cation and cyanide N atoms of the (Co(CN)6)3-anion.

The synthetic procedures and the acid–basic behavior are reported. Most of these compounds are able to selectively encapsulate the small lithium ion in aqueous solution. NMR spectroscopy, mainly 13C and 7Li, has been used to study the encapsulation

The stepwise basicity constants were determined using potentiometric (0.15 mol dm − 3 NMe 4 Cl, 298 9 0.1 K) and NMR (1 H and 13 C) techniques. L behaves as a tetraprotic base: log K 1 =9.62; log K 2 = 9.03; log K 3 = 5.44; log K 4 = 1.9. NMR experiments allowed the determination of the protonation sequence. The influence of the anisolic group inside the macrocyclic cavity upon the basicity behaviour is discussed. The equilibrium constants of the species formed by L with Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) are reported and discussed. The formation constants for the oxygenated species [CoLO 2 ] 2 + , [CoLHO 2 ] 3 + and [CoL(OH)O 2 ] + are:

The general synthetic route followed to synthesize these macrocycles is reported. The basicity constants have been determined and discussed in term of charge repulsions and macrocyclic size. The marked tendency to form polynuclear complexes is demonstrated by the numerous and stable polynuclear metal complexes formed. In the case of the largest macrocycles (k = 11,12) stable trinuclear species ICu LI are formed. For each equilibrium many protonated and hydroxo species are present. For k = 8 and k = 10 good crystals of binuclear copper(I1) complexes were obtained and X-ray analyses carried out. The sgcond-sphere interaction 4between the complex anions IFe(CN)6\ , ICO(CN)~/ and the polyprotonated (polycharged) form of the macrocycles have been studied by potentiometry and cyclic voltammetry. A 'supercomplex' was isolated and its structure solved by X-ray. k 6c 3

The enthalpies of reaction between the branched hexaamine NflJV'JV'-tetrakis(3-aminopropyl) ethyl... more The enthalpies of reaction between the branched hexaamine NflJV'JV'-tetrakis(3-aminopropyl) ethylenediamine (TAPEN) and hydrogen, Ni(II), Cu(I1) and Zn(I1) ions have been determined at 25 "c, I= 0.5 mol dmd3 by continuous titration calorimetry and batch microcalorimetry. By combining these reaction enthalpies with the previously obtained equilibrium constants, the entropic contributions to the studied equilibria are determined and discussed. The results obtained for the enthalpy of the reaction which involves the addition of one hydrogen ion to the 1: 1 complex show that TAPEN behaves as a pentadentate ligand. Comparisons with some related, branched hexaamines have been made.

Today, the pharmaceutical industry invests more than $1 billion each year in the development of new metalbased drugs to improve biological activities, in terms of cellular selectivity, therapeutic efficiency and minimization of side effects. Chemotherapies based on transition metals play a key role in cancer treatment, and among them platinum and palladium are the most fruitful. This article reviews the main recent advances in the design and synthesis of platinum-and palladium-based drugs, their structural features and biological studies of them. The rationale for the choice of the ligand, related to leaving groups, the geometry of the complex and the oxidation state of the metal ion, is discussed. An overview of the main biological techniques and approaches for testing the interaction of these molecules with the biological environment, mainly DNA, to validate the effect is also provided.

The properties of two Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes with two maltol derivative ligands [L1 = N,N 0-... more The properties of two Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes with two maltol derivative ligands [L1 = N,N 0-bis[(3hydroxy-4-pyron-2-yl)methyl]-N,N 0-dimethylethylendiamine (Malten) and L2 = 4,10-bis[(3-hydroxy-4pyron-2-yl)methyl]-1,7-dimethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (Maltonis)] as binders for lanthanide cations [Eu(III) and Dy(III)], were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction and by UV-Vis experiments. [M(II)(H-2 L)] species [Cu(H-2 L1)] and [Co(H-2 L2)] are able to stabilize one hard metal ion such as Eu(III) and Dy(III), giving rise to the formation of hetero-trinuclear complexes of {Ln(III)[M(II)(H-2 L)] 2 } 3+ general formula. The crystal structures of all the studied hetero-trinuclear species highlight that such systems are formed thanks to the synergy between the different stereochemical requirement of the transition metal (Cu(II) or Co(II)) and the different donor atoms set of the ligands. The suitable transition metal ion preorganizes the maltol units in the [M(II)(H-2 L)] complexes for the binding of the hard Ln(III) metal, otherwise difficult to bind in water.
