As a practical theologian I am doing research in contestual theology like Small Christian Communities and Pastoral Institutes in Asia, Africa and Oceania as places of renewal and formation favoring a participative and relational approach in Christian communities and ministries. I am also doing research and publications in Papua New Guinean Mission and Church History, especially of the Missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) and the Congregation Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) in Mainland New Guinea from 1896 onwards.

Introduction n the Papal Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, dated 21 September 2... more Introduction n the Papal Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, dated 21 September 2011, Pope Benedict pointed to an issue which should orient us to a mission we often overlook: “The phenomenon of migration today is also a providential opportunity for the proclamation of the Gospel in the contemporary world”. “Migrants themselves have a special role in this regard because they in turn can become ‘heralds of God’s word and witnesses to the Risen Jesus, the hope of the world’ (Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini, n. 105)”.1 The Pope stated in his Letter that the increasing number of migrants and their mobility create the need to develop more structures and methodology for our migrant ministry. To this statement, I would add that an ardent love for the migrants should inspire us to develop our talents and creative capacity. In this way our vision of migrant mission should guide and empower us to employ the most appropriate and relevant methods. We know there is no perfect ready-made methodology, no exact recipe to make a nice cake. The only way is to have the courage to realize a dream, follow one’s vision, and risk venturing into mission with the migrants and journeying on with them. It always depends a bit on trial-and-error, learning from experience and from one’s mistakes, and so re-adjusting and improving one’s method.

This article focuses on the contribution of pastoral institutes for an inculturated and contextua... more This article focuses on the contribution of pastoral institutes for an inculturated and contextualized ministry in the non-Western local churches. The treated pastoral institutes in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania have played an outstanding role in implementing the communion ecclesiology of Vatican II in their respective local churches by moving towards an inculturated Christian faith and church and a contextualized Christian and ecclesial praxis. By following the Vatican II appeal to read and scrutinize the signs of the times, they played a catalytic function in the local non-Western churches to evangelize and to develop a meaningful ministry and participatory community approach, not only for ordained ministers but also for the major part of God's people, the laity.

The Oxford Handbook of Christianity in Asia has thirty-seven contributions organised in five diff... more The Oxford Handbook of Christianity in Asia has thirty-seven contributions organised in five different thematically oriented blocs. The reviewer participated in the "Interdisciplinary conversations on the occasion of the launch of The Oxford Handbook of Christianity in Asia" organised by the editor of the handbook Felix Wilfred together with the staff of the Asian Center of Cross-Cultural Studies (ACCS) in Chennai, India, on 5-7 November 2014, which enabled him to understand better the tremendously rich and manifold content of this handbook. Highly qualified scholars from different academic disciplines, churches, religions and countries led the interdisciplinary conversations. All scholarly written contributions aim to go beyond the inputs of individually written articles since they are based on the vision and hermeneutical understanding of the board of editors, which aims at mutual learning in the various fields of Christianity in Asia: education, research, public life and social engagement in the field of health care, advocacy and human promotion, interreligious dialogue and relations, theology and pastoral life including worship and spiritual life. Most of the contributing scholars are from Asia and most are Christians with various denominational backgrounds, including women. This makes the handbook to a rich resource book with an applied strong ecumenical, intercultural and interreligious approach. Each part of the handbook starts with a helpful introduction into the selected theme and the contributions of the various authors. In part one "Mapping Asian Christianity", five contributions give an overview of the different situations of Christianity in Asia according to the historical development and the religious, cultural, and political contexts in the various regions of the continent. The seven articles of part two consider the "Cross-cultural flows and pan-Asian movements of Asian Christianity". Michael Amaladoss's insights on the Asian holistic and integrated way of thinking, where reality is experienced as one and interdependent, is worth highlighting. Part three "Asian Christianities and Social-Cultural Processes" consists of nine inputs. Felix Wilfred's analysis and explanation of Christian social engagement in Asia goes also far beyond a generic presentation and knowledge. He shows how Christians contributed with their social awareness to the promotion of more democratic societies and to the process of nation-building. Part four "Asian Christianity in interaction with Asian religious traditions" addresses the encounter and relationship of Asian religions with Christianity. The Dutch scholar Karel Steenbrink, Professor Emeritus of Intercultural Theology at Utrecht Unive... more The Dutch scholar Karel Steenbrink, Professor Emeritus of Intercultural Theology at Utrecht University, published three volumes on Catholics in Indonesia. A documented history. The first volume appeared in 2003 and treats the period from 1808 to 1903. The second volume of K. Steenbrink was written with the cooperation of his wife Paule Maas, and is entitled Catholics in Indonesia, 1808-1942, Volume 2, The spectacular growth of a self-confident minority, 1903-1942: a documented history. In 2015 Steenbrink came out with his third volume with the significant title Catholics in Independent Indonesia: 1945-2010.Karel Steenbrink’s effort to write the first comprehensive history of the Catholic Church in Indonesia in three volumes, based on years of intensive research, deserves high recognition and praise. His publications are not only a great service to the Catholic Church in Indonesia, but also the whole of Indonesian society and for the history of Christianity in Asia.
