Results have shown that the grains of these minerals from samples of sands have different colors, those from the surface horizons have dark brownish spots, due to staining by organic matter, and have a yellowish– to yellowish brown spots due to accumulation of Iron oxides. Results of light minerals indicated that quartz is dominant due to effect of parent material of these soils. Two types of opaque minerals (black and brown) are found, whereas the brown opaque minerals were obvious in heavy minerals.Three groups of transparent heavy minerals are found, stable minerals (Pyroxen and Amphibole), metastable minerals (Epidote and Garnet), and Ultra stable minerals (Zircon and Tourmaline).

Study area was including high express way surrounded Baghdad city, in 43 km distance approximately. Four pollution indexes had been used enrichment factor ratios (EF), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) methods, to assessment of heavy metals pollution for these Soils. Results showed that heavy metals concentrations in soil samples took the order of Ni > Zn > Pb > Cd and all was higher than their concentration in comparison soils. The EF and PLI values decreased with increasing distance away of the highway edges for both sides with random distribution in some locations. This indicated to the affected soils of near sites of 1.5 and 10 m from road sides by emitted gases from vehicles exhausts...

Study area was included the roads of Baghdad City Center. Four main interior roads were chosen in this study which is (Outer Karada, Al- Saadoon, Nidhal and Palestine). Results showed that heavy metals concentrations in soil samples took the following order Zn > Ni > Pb > Cd and all was higher than their concentration in comparison soils. The impact of traffic momentum, especially at public intersections on the concentrations of heavy metals in soils interior streets of Baghdad city, regardless of the traffic density. The results of calculation the values of pollution indexes (EF, CF, PLI and Igeo) that heavy metals concentrations were from human activities (anthropogenic source), which support an assumption of those soils affected by gasses emitted from vehicle exhausts and fly ash or other human activities.

Investigation about the pollution with these metals was achieved from five selected sites locate in study area by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results showed a wide variation in the levels of heavy metals from site to site and from month to month. A total of 180 surface soil samples were analyzed to detecting the pollution with selected samples. The results showed that the highest concentration with Ni was 6.290 mg kg-1 while the lowest concentration detected with Ni was 0.080 mg kg-1. The results of pollution index (enrichment factor, contamination factor, pollution load index and geo-accumulation) of heavy metals (Co, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni) had the following order: Zn > Cd > Ni > Pb > Co.

Sechelt extractions is used to extract PAHs compounds from all samples, gas chromatography was used to determine the PAHs concentration in all samples. The total concentrations of thirteen PAHs were ranged from 4.46ng.g-1 in site one to 17.24 ng.g-1 in site three of dry weight. The PAHs compounds those consist of four to six fused aromatic rings represent the majority among other PAHs in soil samples.
