João Joanaz de Melo graduated and holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering, with a habilitation in Environmental Systems. He is an Associate Professor at NOVA University Lisbon, Portugal, researcher at CENSE, conducting teaching, research and consultancy, on sustainability assessment, ecodesign, energy efficiency and policy, and Nature conservation, among other fields. He has supervised applied research in cooperation with business and institutions involving over 200 partnerships. He authored the popular science book “What is Ecology” and about 300 technical and scientific papers, of which a third international. Ever a lover of Nature, was one of the founders and served as president of GEOTA (national environmental NGO).

Noise-induced pulmonary pathology is still an issue that is regarded with much suspicion despite ... more Noise-induced pulmonary pathology is still an issue that is regarded with much suspicion despite the significant body of evidence demonstrating that acoustic phenomena target the respiratory tract. The goal of this review paper is threefold: a) to describe acoustic phenomena as an agent of disease, and the inadequacies of current legislation regarding noise-induced, non-auditory pathology; b) to trace how the interest in noise-induced pulmonary pathology emerged within the scope of studies on vibroacoustic disease; and c) to bring to light other studies denouncing noise as an agent of disease that impinges on the respiratory tract. As concluding remarks, future perspectives in LFN-related research will be discussed. The need for animal models will be emphasized.
