The progressive construction of downstream-transit protection works has been the answer to this problem. The coastal unit studied here stretches from Racou beach in the south, to the north of the Argelès urbanization, all in the context of the overall evolution of the Roussillon coastline, from the Racou to the Grau of the Port-Barcarès to the north. The latter has a sandy coast, with a seafront dotted with a string of seaside resorts (Argelès-Plage, Saint-Cyprien-Plage, Canet-en-Roussillon, Sainte-Marie-Plage, Torreilles- Plage, Le Barcarès). Along the Argelesian coast, the only work that has emerged is the construction of the port followed in 1974-1976 of the jetties. The situation is worrying today because the very significant reduction in the solid contributions of the Tech following the massive inflow of the flood of 1940 caused a very fast decline of the coastline of Racou beach. Reflection on the
strategies of protection of the goods and the people thus requires a fine knowledge of this hazard. In this context, the pre-coast sediment balances and the possible effects of the downstream-transit port are studied. This is the heart of this work using archival bathymetric data since 1895. The results show that the overall sediment budget is negative and that erosion occurs downstream and upstream of the harbor, particularly more intense downstream. . Our results also show that erosion was observed during the period 1895-1957. For the period 1895- 2011 of the extended zone, the sediment balance is expected to be positive, which is explained by a transfer of sand from the shallows to the larger bottoms. This is why the reduced common area is eroding over the same period. While worsening coastal erosion during the last quarter of the century can partly be explained by natural phenomena such as variations in the regime of storms and inflows, anthropogenic factors may have also accentuated the sedimentary deficit of Racou’s beach. Keywords: front-coast; coastal erosion; beaches; Tech; sandy coast; Racou; port works.
