In this research, we tried to describe in what way what is proposed by a teacher in class can influence student learning, using different tools to analyze tasks and mathematical activities previously exposed.

Instrumental genesis is chosen as the conceptual framework to characterize the interplay between the specific characteristics of a comic and the pieces of scientific knowledge to be translated. Six workshops were conducted and analyzed. The results show that the TSCAs followed the codes that are specific to the comic strip medium and took some distance with the science integrity. Nevertheless being involved in the creative process allowed them to understand the reasons for certain choices of science illustration or storytelling. This approach can foster the emergence of a critical mind with respect to reading science stories created in other contexts.

This paper describes a model training session designed for in-service mathematics teachers, whose purpose is to guide them in their understanding of the relationship between students' tasks and activities in secondary school (from 11 to 18 years). We first explain the didactical tools that we consider necessary in order to address tasks analysis, and then, as an example of a training session, we provide a list of tasks on similar triangles illustrating the two kinds of analysis in which we engage participants. As a conclusion to this paper, we comment on our choices, and their potential influence on teachers' practices. Keywords Tasks Á Activities Á Mathematics Á Teachers' education Á Similar triangles Background We present a scenario designed to stimulate teachers to contemplate the complexity of tasks analysis in mathematics and to provide some professional development, based on appropriate choices of tasks and class-managements. Sessions such as those we describe have been taking place for a few years, intended for in-service teachers or educators. The structure and content of these sessions is based on research results about teaching and teachers' practices (

In this study, we analyse the content and methods of an initial course in research in mathematics education, building some tools to assess how such a course can influence the beginner teachers' practices in class during the first years after their training.

To understand that link, we analyze all the lessons on similar triangles from five classrooms in relation to the pupils' performance on a final exam. Comparing the exercises on the exam with all those done during the similar triangle lessons and taking into account the development of class activities, we attempt to understand how and why the pupils failed or succeeded on the exam. That leads us to analyze similar triangles as a mathematical and educational object. The study also enables us to compare practices in teaching similar triangles and to draw some conclusions about regularity and variety in teachers' practices.
