The process of translating used by the alicarnassian historiographer to help his audience understand that " otherness "-with its inversions, comparisons and analogies-reveals an employment of Lotman's theories. While Herodotus seems to consider some of these barbaric cultures in their entirety and internal structure, at the same time he treats others as examples of non-cultures. There is, in conclusion, a difference between the historiographical theory and its implementation. This difference is due to the need to order the " unordered "-i.e. the barbaric traditions-, so that the " unordered " can be understood by his greek audience.
