In order to discriminate the void space from the grains, the samples were impregnated with a fluorescent dyed (Rhodamine B) resin and thin-sections with a thickness larger than usual were prepared and studied with CSLM. Two different kinds of samples have been studied: mechanically deformed samples of Darley Dale and Berea sandstones and intact samples of Rothbach and Bentheim sandstones. On each sample several three dimensional blocks have been investigated with size 228 by 152 microns and depths ranging from 35 to 100 microns. From each block a series of tens of parallel "virtual sections" has been recorded, separated by 1 or 2 microns in depth. First we show some examples on Darley Dale and Berea sandstone samples deformed in triaxial experiments. Rotating animations are built from series of 3D views of reconstructed crack networks taken step by step for different block orientatio...

In this way, it seems to be of interest to design a clinical guide that could be consulted as a PDA program (Pocket PC and Palm versions), in a personal computer or Internet. Clinical contents of protocols, guides, and articles, preferably based on the evidence and the clinical experience of 102 authors. Implementation of a program that allows the guide to be used in a PDA, to update it or to add notes using tools that could be downloaded from a web page. A clinical practice guide SEORL-PDA version 1.1, with thirteen ENT's topics, calculation algorithms, internal links and possibility of update the content and to add notes. SEORL-PDA is a clinical guide in PDA format, with enough information and possibilities. Its downloading and installation is easily done following the instructions of the web created with these purposes.

We studied the ploidy status and other DNA cytometric parameters in 68 patients with colorectal carcinoma. In addition, clinical-histologic and follow-up information was collected for at least five years. DNA histograms were available in all cases, showing a diploid DNA distribution pattern in 6 (8.8%), tetraploid in 21 (30.9%), hyperdiploid in 20 (29.4%) and hypertetraploid in 21 (30.9%). The differences in the correlation study between cytometric parameters and pathologic features were not statistically significant. Ploidy status and DNA malignancy grade were individually related to five-year survival (P < .005 and P < .05). The data show that DNA image cytometry can provide valuable prognostic information on colorectal carcinomas and may prove useful in guiding adjuvant therapy in these patients.

Nevertheless, the education at University will turn out to be a more complex pedagogic process. We present a multimedia educational material (MEM), developed as an online course to "Seminars of Otolaryngology", and available free at the University website. MEM was designed and edited by, ENT teachers, pedagogues, and image and computer experts. It has been structured as a series of modules that integrate texts, images, movie clips, video, audio and animations. The schematic presentation stands out with progressive access to the topics through internal and external links. The pedagogic resources give additional support by learning objectives, glossary, references, index and searcher. Finally, the activities and instrumental simulations complete the training in diagnosis and treatment. The MEM is an interactive useful software program for medical training in Otolaryngology, without av...

The aim of this paper is to correlate information provided by the microcrack network, mineralogy and U-micromapping studies which can be used to quantify the extent of radioelement migration/retention in the granite. The experimental procedure combines complementary microscopic techniques. Data on preferential fissure

The goal of this paper is to show that, in particular, confocal microscopy is a useful tool in geosciences because it provides accurate and relevant information on the 3D geometry of the pore space in rocks. Three important geological processes have been investigated: cracking in granites, cementation and diagenetic compaction in sandstones and hydrothermal alteration in granular materials. CSLM was used to characterise 3D crack networks in La Peyratte granite samples in which cracking was artificially induced either by heating samples at selected temperatures in order to induce thermal cracking, or by performing mechanical tests in order to develop stress-induced cracking at room temperature. Qualitative and quantitative results show the different mechanisms acting during natural cracking. CSLM was also used to study the natural cementation of sediments; for this purpose 3D observations of the pore system of Fontainebleau sandstone samples with different degrees of cementation and diagenesis were done. We found large differences in connectivity, pore size and shape depending on cementation. Finally, we present some results on artificial granular materials (sintered glass beads) altered by hot water (2208C): some microstructural parameters were analysed in order to quantify the effect of alteration on the microstructural properties of the granular material. We concluded from this study that the large drop in permeability (6 orders of magnitude), when comparing non-altered to altered samples, is due to a complete change of the pore structure and a strong reduction of the mean pore size.

The technique provides a unique three-dimensional picture of the rock microfractography. CSLM is unique in observing fine details of the fractographic network (connectivity, tortuosity, etc.), its geometry and its relation to other rock-forming components. The fractographic images with standard fluorescence microscopy are compared with those obtained with CSLM. The examples presented emphasize the advantages of CSLM: three-dimensional visualization of the microfractographic network, crack connectivity, automatic evaluation of direction and slope of fissures. These studies are related to the migration of radionuclides in the geosphere. The relations between potentially water-conducting open fissures, and the rock-forming minerals provide a means of modelling the ‘radionuclide retardation mechanism’, a security factor in their definitive storage in rock masses.
