Rural life in Central Syria in the early Byzantine period (4th-7th century)

La Syrie centrale connaît au début de la période byzantine, et en particulier au Ve et au VIe siè... more La Syrie centrale connaît au début de la période byzantine, et en particulier au Ve et au VIe siècle, un fort mouvement d’expansion des sédentaires vers l’est, qui coïncide avec une importante mise en valeur de ces nouveaux territoires. Comme pour d’autres régions de Syrie et du Proche-Orient à la même époque, un optimum climatique – pourtant déclinant – semble avoir permis la conquête et l’exploitation agricole de nouveaux terroirs dans une zone marginale qui n’avait jusqu’alors connu qu’une occupation sédentaire ponctuelle. La Syrie centrale est caractérisée par des milieux aux potentiels agronomiques très différents, souvent imbriqués. Le peuplement et la mise en valeur y sont soumis à la double contrainte de l’aridité climatique et édaphique, qui s’exerce avec une prégnance croissante vers le sud et l’est. Multimodal literacies and academic publishing: The eTalks

Academic publications and pedagogy have been deeply reconfigured by the emergence of a new kind o... more Academic publications and pedagogy have been deeply reconfigured by the emergence of a new kind of knowledge produced by multimodal literacies (text, image and sound together). Academic publishing needs a digital multimedia editing platform, that can be carefully edited and quoted in details, in the same way that printed sources are. Consequently, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (Vital-IT, Lausanne, CH) is developing such a platform with the "eTalks". The eTalks application is implemented via an easy-to-use editor interface, designed for the use of researchers themselves, to create and edit original eTalks. This permits the linking together of images, sounds and textual materials with hyperlinks, enriching it with relevant information. The final release of eTalks allows complete 'citability' of its contents: each and every portion of the researchers' talks can be precisely referred to and thus cited with a specific identifier, just like any traditional, paper-based academic publication but with all the potential for plural literacies. It is openly accessible and the code is open source, including guidelines to install the eTalks. It is notably developed in collaboration with the Erasmus+ project #dariahTeach. The DRM (Digital Right Management) is a key issue in such an open access editing platform.

Au cours de l’epoque byzantine (IVe-VIIe s.), la Syrie centrale a connu un fort mouvement d’expan... more Au cours de l’epoque byzantine (IVe-VIIe s.), la Syrie centrale a connu un fort mouvement d’expansion des sedentaires vers l’est, qui coincide avec une importante mise en valeur de ces nouveaux territoires. Parmi les milieux tres varies qui composent la Syrie centrale, il est question ici de deux secteurs geographiques correspondant a trois plateaux basaltiques (Ǧabal al-‘Alā, Ǧabal al-Ḥaṣ et Ǧabal Sbayṭ) qui, du fait de leurs situations differentes, ont du etre concernes a des moments differents par ce mouvement d’expansion. Les populations byzantines y ont adopte plusieurs formes d’implantation (villes, villages, hameaux, fermes et monasteres) qu’il convient de definir avant d’en analyser la repartition, contrastee selon les massifs. The mission of the DARIAH-RC project is to develop an open-source, high quality, multilingual reference curriculum for the Digital Arts and Humanities. The DARIAH Reference Curriculum (DARIAH-RC) will strengthen alliances and foster innovative teaching and learning practices among members of the ESFRI-roadmap Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH). The aims of the dissemination plan are: •to identify the best channels and means for communicating with each one •to co-ordinate the dissemination activities of the partners involved to ensure that DARIAH-RC receives national, European and international coverage •to co-ordinate and plan dissemination materials for use by the project partners •to prepare the evaluation of dissemination activities across the project

Les bains de Rasm el-Hajal (Syrie, région de Khanaser)

Cette version resumee du rapport depose a la Direction generale des antiquites de Syrie presente ... more Cette version resumee du rapport depose a la Direction generale des antiquites de Syrie presente le cadre, les objectifs et les premiers resultats d'une courte mission de diagnostic realise sur les bains de Rasm el-Hajal, village protobyzantin de la steppe syrienne. La mission a permis de confirmer l'interpretation thermale de l'edifice qui, comme le centre monumental du village, doit etre date du VIeme siecle apr. J.-C. Il vient enrichir le corpus des bains du Proche-Orient d'un exemple situe dans une zone jusqu'ici tres peu representee et qui ne semblent se rattacher ni aux typologies bien etablies des bains de Syrie du nord, ni aux modeles recurrents des bains omeyyades. Si certains elements de son plan, les techniques constructives et l'echelle reduite du monument sont caracteristiques de son epoque, l'utilisation d'une salle froide hexagonale en fait un exemple atypique et relativement sophistique.

The recent survey program undertaken in the arid margins of Northern Syria has provided a good in... more The recent survey program undertaken in the arid margins of Northern Syria has provided a good insight into the settlements patterns, the subsistence strategies, and the economic specialization developed in this area from the beginning of the Roman period onward, and more particularly during the fifth and sixth centuries AD. Despite the impressive amount of data gathered by surveys, numerous questions arise regarding the detailed features of these settlements since archaeological research in this region involved very few excavations focusing on late antique occupation. Al-Rawda archaeological site is well known for its Bronze Age urban settlement. However, during the 2009 and 2010 campaign, the excavation has focused on a building area outside the main Bronze Age city wall which turned out to belong to the Byzantine period. The small parts of the buildings that have been brought to light do not allow us to understand their layout during the three phases pointed out by the excavators...
