He travelled to Switzerland on four separate occasions between 1989 and 1993. His speeches were deeply rooted in European culture and were positively welcomed despite this country’s historical reluctance to a Europe shaped by Germany and France. Despite Mitterrand’s interest in Switzerland, the Swiss and the cantons voted against joining the European Economic Area – EEA in 1992. Although France was disappointed by this development, François Mitterrand continued to hope that Switzerland would join this great European design. This study of the four travels of François Mitterrand to Switzerland between 1989 and 1993 is based on unpublished archives and aims to be a milestone in the fields of Mitterrandism, European integration and Swiss-French relations.
