The aim is to access whether and under what conditions Italy – from the specific perspective of the security/democracy connection – is to be considered, alternatively, a “backward” country, a political and institutional laboratory of future trends, an anomaly compared to other European democracies or, finally, a specific variation of common trends already characterising other European democracies. Such changes include the transformation of the country’s role within the Western collective security system, the shifting nature and modus operandi of the terrorist threat, and the emergence of regional instabilities affecting immigration flows.

The analysis focuses on the way national newspapers have covered and discussed key political events related to European politics and migration dynamics between 2014 and 2018. The results of this analysis have been published in a special issue of The International Spectator (2019, volume 54, issue 3, pp. 1-106). A corpus of several Italian, French, Hungarian, UK and Norwegian newspapers has been examined. For each national case study data were collected from two weeks before to one week after three key political events between January 2014 – January 2018: • the 2014 European Parliament elections (22-25 May 2014); • the EU-Turkey Statement/agreement/deal (18 March 2016); • a key 'national moment' related to migration within the designated timespan...

Ideally, the European Union (EU) would have developed a single asylum system with equal criteria applying to all Member States and full recognition of the international protection status everywhere in the Union. This would have taken care of the primary concern of the Member States, that is, the prevention of asylum seekers' secondary movements. The abandonment of the nation-specific prerogatives would also have allowed for a focus on the asylum seekers' needs. However, the proposals issued by the European Commission between 2015 and 2016 in no way suggest that a uniform asylum system is on the way. This paper examines the implications of some of these proposals for the governance of asylum and for the understanding of international protection as the guarantee of specific rights to foreign citizens in need. It further assesses t...

It provides in-depth, cutting edge and original contributions of world-class research on the EU in international affairs by highlighting new developments, insights, challenges and opportunities. It encompasses analyses of the EU's international role, as mediated by its own Member States, in international institutions and in its strategic bilateral and regional partnerships. Books in the Series examine evolving EU internal policies that have external implications and the ways in which these are both driven by, and feed back into, international developments. Grounded in Political Science, International Relations, International Political Economy, Law, Sociology and History, the Series reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. We welcome book proposals relating to the changing role of the EU in international affairs across policies and the Union's relations with different parts of the world, as well as relations with states and multilateral institutions. We are interested in research on values and norms, interests and global governance and welcome both theory-informed studies and studies comparing the EU with other major global actors. This paper sets out to contribute to the debate by focusing on the role of a specific component of this order: the relationship between the United States and the European Union. The question addressed is whether the potential transformations experienced by the element of the transatlantic relationship due to the ‘ Trump effect’ are liable to have a substantial and distinctive impact on the wider order. Using the lenses of the security community approach, we point out variance and convergences in interests, interaction, institution and identities of the two partners, and to what extent the advent of Trump has actually – or is likely to – impinge on each of these categories, and how this affects the foundations of the international liberal order.

For this purpose, we consider the rationales underlying the activity of three subjects participating to the regulatory regime of the global financial market .(OECD, IASB, Credit Rating Agencies). The thesis infers that such nexus cannot be provided either by progressive liberalism's normative solutions, nor by neoliberalim's, but rather by the conceptual and practical tension between the two traditions of thought, which in turn generates a international locus of authentic "political practice"

It was then confronted with massive amounts of people fleeing their countries and aiming at the EU. Migration is part of Italy’s history, though not in the same vein as for other European countries. When countries such as Germany, UK or France were engaged with ‘Gastarbeiter’ and naturalizing former colonies’ citizens, Italy was still largely an emigration country. The progressive shift into an immigration country has been recent. The Testo Unico, the key document on migration, was issued in 1998 at the end of a decade when Italy experienced massive inflows of asylum seekers (richiedenti asilo/‘profughi’) from the former Yugoslavia Republic. Surprisingly, the document only scarcely addressed asylum matters, which instead found

In investigating the degree to which the UK’s policy complies with the conceptions of justice considered in this book—non-domination, impartiality and mutual recognition—the chapter will investigate the logic of Britain’s ‘quest for control’ of its borders and the make-up of its population, its distinctive attitude towards the Union’s and the international regime of refugee protection, as well as prospects for the country’s future participation in the System of Governance.

Although the management of inbound popu-lation movements clearly comprises a relevant external dimension, the relations between immigration and foreign policy are less plain than might appear at first sight. Based on this assumption, the paper examines the domestic-international nexus in Italy’s immigration policy, the association of the latter with foreign policy, and how this process is connected to Italy’s participation in the migration and asy-lum policy system of the European Union (EU). In particular, the article examines the role played by Interior Ministers in bridging the domestic-international divide typical of this policy area, as well as how the country’s participation in the EU migration policy system has backed up this process.
