Winner of the ESI postdoctoral program "Social sciences and humanities in a post-crisis period" (Research topic: Economic history). He holds a PhD from the University of Calabria. His research interests range from industrial archeology to economic history and the history of industry with particular attention to the history of the factories of Southern Italy. A differenza del turismo tradizionale, in cui i viaggiatori si limitano a visitare attrazioni turistiche, il turismo esperienziale incoraggia un coinvolgimento attivo con la cultura e la comunità locali. I turisti sono invitati a immergersi in esperienze autentiche, che spaziano da laboratori artigianali a corsi di cucina, permettendo loro di apprendere e vivere le tradizioni locali. Questo approccio non solo arricchisce il viaggio di significati personali, ma promuove anche la sostenibilità, poiché incoraggia interazioni rispettose e responsabili con le comunità. L'obiettivo non è solo il piacere del viaggio, ma anche la ricerca di connessioni profonde e significative, che contribuiscono al benessere individuale e al rafforzamento delle economie locali. In questo contesto, il turismo esperienziale si configura come un mezzo per favorire una comprensione interculturale più autentica e sostenibile. In the second half of the 18th century, several “workers’ villages” emerged in the Kingdom of Nap... more In the second half of the 18th century, several “workers’ villages” emerged in the Kingdom of Naples, particularly in Calabria. Notable examples include the villages of Mongiana, Pazzano, and Bivongi, which were designed as self-sufficient settlements for industrial workers, providing housing, education, and healthcare services. These industrial villages embodied the reformist ideas of the time, aiming to improve workers’ living conditions while keeping them isolated from the revolutionary ideas spreading through major cities. These Calabrian settlements were not only industrial hubs but also held strategic economic importance within the Kingdom of Naples. Mongiana became a crucial metallurgical center, contributing significantly to the Kingdom’s iron and weapons production. The natural resources in the area, such as forests and rivers, supported the establishment of permanent foundries, replacing the previous “itinerant forges” that had depleted local timber supplies rapidly. Bourbon reforms, along with study missions to Europe to acquire advanced technologies, illustrated the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies’ ambition to compete with major European industrial centers. Newly discovered documents from the State Archive of Reggio Calabria reveal the economic and social challenges faced by the workers, uncovering a complex web of debts and economic pressures on their daily lives. These workers’ villages not only stand as significant examples of industrial archaeology but also represent an early experiment in proto-industrial organization and social welfare, anticipating the 19th-century model of company towns.

After the establishment of the Naval Academy in 1735, Carlo di Borbone founded the Corps Academy and the Engineers Academy, merging these institutions in 1769 into the Royal Military Academy. Military facilities were strategically located in the triangle formed by the Royal Palace, Castelnuovo, and the Naval Arsenal, with modern facilities also in Castellammare, Poggioreale, Gaeta, Capua, Torre Annunziata, and Mongiana. The Artillery Arsenal and the Royal Foundry were central to the production of military equipment, utilizing advanced technologies. The Royal Weapon Assembly handled weapon assembly, while the Royal Factory of Torre Annunziata produced cutting and firearms. Carlo Filangieri played a crucial role in reorganizing the military industry and promoting protectionist policies. In 1834, under the leadership of Ferdinand II, Filangieri was appointed to head the reorganization of the Artillery Corps, improving existing facilities and promoting self-sufficiency in military supplies. This period marked a transition toward industrialization of military production in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, highlighting the importance of having a well-equipped central arsenal to ensure the political and military autonomy of the country.

Nel tardo Settecento, la Calabria ha attirato l'attenzione di numerosi viaggiatori stranieri, che... more Nel tardo Settecento, la Calabria ha attirato l'attenzione di numerosi viaggiatori stranieri, che hanno documentato le loro esperienze e impressioni sulla regione. Questi resoconti forniscono una preziosa fonte per comprendere la storia e la cultura della Calabria di quel periodo. Attraverso i loro occhi, possiamo osservare i cambiamenti avvenuti nella regione, sia dal punto di vista socioeconomico che culturale. Questi viaggiatori hanno contribuito a delineare l'immagine della Calabria come una terra di contrasti, dove tradizione e modernità si mescolano, e dove l'identità del popolo calabrese sta emergendo gradualmente. Tuttavia, affiora anche una realtà complessa, caratterizzata da problemi collettivi e da una società in trasformazione. Questo studio analizza i resoconti di viaggio di alcuni dei viaggiatori più influenti di quel periodo, evidenziando il loro ruolo nella comprensione della Calabria del tardo Settecento e il loro contributo alla ricostruzione della sua identità storica.

This study analyzes the exploitation of foreign labor in Italian agriculture, focusing on the cas... more This study analyzes the exploitation of foreign labor in Italian agriculture, focusing on the case of Rosarno. Since the 1990s, the presence of migrants has allowed the main agricultural districts to intensify production, even though many migrants have been employed irregularly. Rosarno has become known for a widespread system of violence, exploitation, and social and housing marginalization, which mainly affected migrants. Despite protests and legislative intervention, such as the "Rosarno Law" to counter illegal hiring, the system has remained rooted in the local economy. In this study, starting from a detailed analysis, local and international experiences will be cited which have proposed alternative models of ethical and profitable agricultural production. As is known, Calabria's economy is extremely fragile, marked by intense emigration flows for over a century. This factor has strongly influenced the infrastructural, economic, and social development of its small and very small centres, which in 80% of cases suffer the consequences of depopulation, abandonment and lack of services. Some of these cities, starting from the end of the 90s in conjunction with the influx of migrants arriving on their coasts, have implemented reception projects that are celebrated today as models, such as nearby Riace. 1. Introduzione È da oltre quindi anni che Rosarno, borgo di circa sedicimila anime adagiato nel mezzo della Piana di Gioia Tauro ed immerso in un paesaggio ben noto per la sua abbondanza in oliveti e agrumeti, costituisce la destinazione di migliaia di immigrati, per lo più clandestini, originari dell'Africa e dell'Europa dell'Est, che ivi vengono impiegati quali braccianti stagionali. Questi uomini, costretti, per sopravvivere, alla raccolta di arance e olive a Rosarno, cipolle a Tropea, fragole a Lamezia nel periodo che intercorre tra novembre ed aprile, cadono sovente vittime di soprusi di spietati caporali i quali, consci che il lavoro nei campi rappresenti per loro la sola fonte di sostentamento, li costringono a condizioni disonorevoli, tanto per gli orari cui debbono sottostare quanto per la totale assenza di misure di tutela e sicurezza, senza trascurare la fatiscenza dei casolari abbandonati in cui si ritrovano a dimorare, impossibilitati ad usufruire sia di luce che di acqua. Sottomesso ad uno sfruttamento dietro il quale si cela la gravosa presenza della criminalità organizzata, l'immigrato clandestino vive la misera condizione «dell'uomo nero che dimora nel mondo delle ombre, perché egli non esiste come persona, quindi non è soggetto di diritto. Spesso è proletario che lavora ma non ha diritto di parola, e senza la parola è un servo»; un servo, dunque, che «ha solo le sue braccia che lavorano come pale meccaniche e le sue mani che non possono parlare ma [che] si muovono alla ricerca dell'identità umana perduta». Così com'è innegabile ritenere che, in Calabria, la questione dell'immigrazione e del lavoro in nero siano strettamente connessi a quella medesima 'ndrangheta cui fa (anche) capo la proprietà della quasi totalità degli agrumeti della Regione, parimenti non è azzardato ritenere che nel medesimo contesto, in cui prolifera il germe del lavoro clandestino sommerso, abbia avuto origine, nel gennaio del 2010, la violenta ribellione degli extra-comunitari di Rosarno. Più e più volte il Legislatore è intervenuto per occuparsi dell'annoso problema del lavoro sommerso nella Piana di Gioia Tauro e, in tal senso, la rivolta di Rosarno non ha fatto nulla di meno che amplificare l'urgenza con la quale, il suddetto problema, necessitava d'esser trattato; necessità, quest'ultima, confluita nell'emanazione della legge n. 248 del 4 agosto 2006, di cui l'art. 36, recante Misure urgenti per il contrasto del lavoro nero e per la promozione della sicurezza nei luoghi di lavoro, qualifica il Lo sfruttamento della manodopera straniera in agricoltura e il caso di Rosarno Economia e Politica è una pubblicazione online registrata con

Up until the late 19th century, the area encompassing the municipalities of Bivongi, Pazzano, Stilo, Fabrizia, Mongiana, and Guardavalle stood as one of southern Italy's foremost centers for iron production and mining. Drawing upon archaeological, historical, and archival sources, this research seeks to enrich our comprehension of the economic and industrial activities that define this region. Utilizing techniques such as direct source study and cross-referencing with literature on the subject, this investigation has consulted archival documents stored in the State Archives of Naples and the State Archives of Catanzaro. The historical and geological backdrop of the Stilaro Valley furnishes an insight into its mineral wealth and the intricate mining and ironworking undertakings spanning centuries. Historical evidence, bolstered by significant discoveries, suggests an ancient tradition of metalworking in the area, with its influence extending into Magna Graecia. The scrutiny of mines and ironworks unveils a nuanced dynamic of adaptation and interaction among ancient communities, whose migrations and settlements were shaped by the natural resources and economic prospects offered by the region. Industrial Growth and Socio-Economic Impact: An Analysis of Armi's Manufacturing History in the Mongiana Industrial Village of Serre Calabria

The Mongiana Arms Factory in Calabria (Italy), built in 1852, constitutes a significant example o... more The Mongiana Arms Factory in Calabria (Italy), built in 1852, constitutes a significant example of 19th century armoury. Designed by Domenico Fortunato Savino, active from 1852 to the mid-1860s, the factory produced 2000-3000 weapons annually for the bourbon army, with a peak of 7000-8000 in periods of maximum production. He introduced the «Mongiana» spring-loaded rifle, replacing the French model of 1842. After the unification of Italy, it lost relevance, being downgraded to a transformation workshop, and later closed. Today, part of the Ecomuseum of the Ironworks and Foundries of Calabria, the building has been under restoration since 2013. The Museum of the Royal Bourbon Ironworks, the result of a careful recovery process, allows for an in-depth exploration of the historical, economic, and technological role of the factory in the panorama of the steel industry of the time.

Abstract: This study examines the implementation of a "local currency" in Riace, an initiative ai... more Abstract: This study examines the implementation of a "local currency" in Riace, an initiative aimed at facilitating purchases for migrants hosted in the community. Through the use of paper vouchers, issued by the Municipality and convertible into euros once European funding arrived, an attempt was made to speed up the time between the allocation of funds and their disbursement to support the local economy. The analysis highlights the challenges linked to the certainty of voucher conversion and underlines the importance of transparent and efficient management of these initiatives to maximize their impact on the territory. Furthermore, the report explores other similar experiences in other Italian cities, demonstrating that potential good practices exist. However, it is critical that these initiatives are implemented correctly to achieve meaningful results. Therefore, we underline the importance of developing an informed and genuine political interest in such projects in order to fully exploit their potential.

This research is based on a rigorous exploration of archival sources and field investigation, allowing us to outline the historical and economic events of significant importance that have left an indelible mark on the industrial history of Southern Italy.

Il presente studio tende ad esaminare le miniere e ferriere della vallata dello Stilaro e il proc... more Il presente studio tende ad esaminare le miniere e ferriere della vallata dello Stilaro e il processo siderurgico antico. Sino alla fine del XIX secolo, il territorio calabrese, in cui insistono i comuni di Bivongi, Pazzano, Stilo, Fabrizia, Mongiana, Guardavalle, costituiva uno dei piu importanti centri siderurgici e minerari dell’Italia meridionale. In varie epoche furono attive: tre fabbriche d’armi, trenta ferriere e due fonderie. In questi opifici venina lavorata la limonite, estratta dai giacimenti, ubicati nei monti: Stella, Mammicomito, Petracca e Consolino. Ai nostri giorni, sulla scorta di nuove conoscenze scaturite dallo studio di alcuni documenti d’archivio e da nuovi ritrovamenti archeologici, si sta delineando, sempre piu, la convinzione che le attivita metallurgiche, nell’area, possano ricondursi a tempi ben piu antichi.

Il presento studio analizza la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana evidenziando le t... more Il presento studio analizza la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana evidenziando le tracce tangibili dell'impegno lavorativo. Situato nel cuore delle Serre Calabre, costituisce un rilevante esempio di insediamento minerariosiderurgico dell'Ottocento. Costruito nel 1771 come risultato della necessità pratica di trasferire gli impianti di lavorazione da Stilo, il villaggio cresceva nel corso degli anni e offriva alloggio, istruzione, assistenza sanitaria e intrattenimento ai lavoratori. Gli imprenditori svolgevano un ruolo centrale nell'organizzazione delle fabbriche e nella vita dei lavoratori, cercando di migliorare le loro condizioni. L'elaborato si propone di analizzare e ricostruire la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana durante il primo periodo borbonico, compreso tra il 1734 e il 1799. Utilizzando fonti di archivio pertinenti, verrà approfondito lo sviluppo delle Ferriere nel decennio francese, ovvero nel periodo compreso tra il 1806 e il 1815. Inoltre, verrà visualizzato il secondo periodo borbonico, che va dal 1815 al 1860, al fine di comprendere ulteriormente l'evoluzione e l'impatto delle attività siderurgiche in quel contesto temporale.

Il carattere evolutivo di aspetti sociali e delle consuetudini familiari del luogo consente di seguire lo sviluppo della società aggiornando continuamente il quadro evolutivo dei bisogni cangianti del popolo. Nel saggio sono stati presi in esame gli atti dei notai stilesi attualmente custoditi nella sezione di Locri dell'Archivio di Stato di Reggio Calabria. Ha proceduto attraverso una campionatura dei principali notai, attivi a Stilo tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo. Queste fonti archivistiche sono state esaminate in maniera incrociata per ricostruire un quadro degli usi familiari locali in materia di contratti matrimoniali e di successioni testamentarie, e più in generale del rapporto culturale con i beni materiali e con la loro funzione anche dopo la morte.

The natural resources in the area, such as forests and rivers, supported the establishment of permanent foundries, replacing the previous “itinerant forges” that had depleted local timber supplies rapidly. Bourbon reforms, along with study missions to Europe to acquire advanced technologies, illustrated the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies’ ambition to compete with major European industrial centers. Newly discovered documents from the State Archive of Reggio Calabria reveal the economic and social challenges faced by the workers, uncovering a complex web of debts and economic pressures on their daily lives. These workers’ villages not only stand as significant examples of industrial archaeology but also represent an early experiment in proto-industrial organization and social welfare, anticipating the 19th-century model of company towns.

After the establishment of the Naval Academy in 1735, Carlo di Borbone founded the Corps Academy and the Engineers Academy, merging these institutions in 1769 into the Royal Military Academy. Military facilities were strategically located in the triangle formed by the Royal Palace, Castelnuovo, and the Naval Arsenal, with modern facilities also in Castellammare, Poggioreale, Gaeta, Capua, Torre Annunziata, and Mongiana. The Artillery Arsenal and the Royal Foundry were central to the production of military equipment, utilizing advanced technologies. The Royal Weapon Assembly handled weapon assembly, while the Royal Factory of Torre Annunziata produced cutting and firearms. Carlo Filangieri played a crucial role in reorganizing the military industry and promoting protectionist policies. In 1834, under the leadership of Ferdinand II, Filangieri was appointed to head the reorganization of the Artillery Corps, improving existing facilities and promoting self-sufficiency in military supplies. This period marked a transition toward industrialization of military production in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, highlighting the importance of having a well-equipped central arsenal to ensure the political and military autonomy of the country.

Questi resoconti forniscono una preziosa fonte per comprendere la storia e la cultura della Calabria di quel periodo. Attraverso i loro occhi, possiamo osservare i cambiamenti avvenuti nella regione, sia dal punto di vista socioeconomico che culturale. Questi viaggiatori hanno contribuito a delineare l'immagine della Calabria come una terra di contrasti, dove tradizione e modernità si mescolano, e dove l'identità del popolo calabrese sta emergendo gradualmente. Tuttavia, affiora anche una realtà complessa, caratterizzata da problemi collettivi e da una società in trasformazione. Questo studio analizza i resoconti di viaggio di alcuni dei viaggiatori più influenti di quel periodo, evidenziando il loro ruolo nella comprensione della Calabria del tardo Settecento e il loro contributo alla ricostruzione della sua identità storica.

This study analyzes the exploitation of foreign labor in Italian agriculture, focusing on the cas... more This study analyzes the exploitation of foreign labor in Italian agriculture, focusing on the case of Rosarno. Since the 1990s, the presence of migrants has allowed the main agricultural districts to intensify production, even though many migrants have been employed irregularly. Rosarno has become known for a widespread system of violence, exploitation, and social and housing marginalization, which mainly affected migrants. Despite protests and legislative intervention, such as the "Rosarno Law" to counter illegal hiring, the system has remained rooted in the local economy. In this study, starting from a detailed analysis, local and international experiences will be cited which have proposed alternative models of ethical and profitable agricultural production. As is known, Calabria's economy is extremely fragile, marked by intense emigration flows for over a century. This factor has strongly influenced the infrastructural, economic, and social development of its small and very small centres, which in 80% of cases suffer the consequences of depopulation, abandonment and lack of services. Some of these cities, starting from the end of the 90s in conjunction with the influx of migrants arriving on their coasts, have implemented reception projects that are celebrated today as models, such as nearby Riace. 1. Introduzione È da oltre quindi anni che Rosarno, borgo di circa sedicimila anime adagiato nel mezzo della Piana di Gioia Tauro ed immerso in un paesaggio ben noto per la sua abbondanza in oliveti e agrumeti, costituisce la destinazione di migliaia di immigrati, per lo più clandestini, originari dell'Africa e dell'Europa dell'Est, che ivi vengono impiegati quali braccianti stagionali. Questi uomini, costretti, per sopravvivere, alla raccolta di arance e olive a Rosarno, cipolle a Tropea, fragole a Lamezia nel periodo che intercorre tra novembre ed aprile, cadono sovente vittime di soprusi di spietati caporali i quali, consci che il lavoro nei campi rappresenti per loro la sola fonte di sostentamento, li costringono a condizioni disonorevoli, tanto per gli orari cui debbono sottostare quanto per la totale assenza di misure di tutela e sicurezza, senza trascurare la fatiscenza dei casolari abbandonati in cui si ritrovano a dimorare, impossibilitati ad usufruire sia di luce che di acqua. Sottomesso ad uno sfruttamento dietro il quale si cela la gravosa presenza della criminalità organizzata, l'immigrato clandestino vive la misera condizione «dell'uomo nero che dimora nel mondo delle ombre, perché egli non esiste come persona, quindi non è soggetto di diritto. Spesso è proletario che lavora ma non ha diritto di parola, e senza la parola è un servo»; un servo, dunque, che «ha solo le sue braccia che lavorano come pale meccaniche e le sue mani che non possono parlare ma [che] si muovono alla ricerca dell'identità umana perduta». Così com'è innegabile ritenere che, in Calabria, la questione dell'immigrazione e del lavoro in nero siano strettamente connessi a quella medesima 'ndrangheta cui fa (anche) capo la proprietà della quasi totalità degli agrumeti della Regione, parimenti non è azzardato ritenere che nel medesimo contesto, in cui prolifera il germe del lavoro clandestino sommerso, abbia avuto origine, nel gennaio del 2010, la violenta ribellione degli extra-comunitari di Rosarno. Più e più volte il Legislatore è intervenuto per occuparsi dell'annoso problema del lavoro sommerso nella Piana di Gioia Tauro e, in tal senso, la rivolta di Rosarno non ha fatto nulla di meno che amplificare l'urgenza con la quale, il suddetto problema, necessitava d'esser trattato; necessità, quest'ultima, confluita nell'emanazione della legge n. 248 del 4 agosto 2006, di cui l'art. 36, recante Misure urgenti per il contrasto del lavoro nero e per la promozione della sicurezza nei luoghi di lavoro, qualifica il Lo sfruttamento della manodopera straniera in agricoltura e il caso di Rosarno Economia e Politica è una pubblicazione online registrata con

Up until the late 19th century, the area encompassing the municipalities of Bivongi, Pazzano, Stilo, Fabrizia, Mongiana, and Guardavalle stood as one of southern Italy's foremost centers for iron production and mining. Drawing upon archaeological, historical, and archival sources, this research seeks to enrich our comprehension of the economic and industrial activities that define this region. Utilizing techniques such as direct source study and cross-referencing with literature on the subject, this investigation has consulted archival documents stored in the State Archives of Naples and the State Archives of Catanzaro. The historical and geological backdrop of the Stilaro Valley furnishes an insight into its mineral wealth and the intricate mining and ironworking undertakings spanning centuries. Historical evidence, bolstered by significant discoveries, suggests an ancient tradition of metalworking in the area, with its influence extending into Magna Graecia. The scrutiny of mines and ironworks unveils a nuanced dynamic of adaptation and interaction among ancient communities, whose migrations and settlements were shaped by the natural resources and economic prospects offered by the region. The Mongiana Arms Factory in Calabria (Italy), built in 1852, constitutes a significant example o... more The Mongiana Arms Factory in Calabria (Italy), built in 1852, constitutes a significant example of 19th century armoury. Designed by Domenico Fortunato Savino, active from 1852 to the mid-1860s, the factory produced 2000-3000 weapons annually for the bourbon army, with a peak of 7000-8000 in periods of maximum production. He introduced the «Mongiana» spring-loaded rifle, replacing the French model of 1842. After the unification of Italy, it lost relevance, being downgraded to a transformation workshop, and later closed. Today, part of the Ecomuseum of the Ironworks and Foundries of Calabria, the building has been under restoration since 2013. The Museum of the Royal Bourbon Ironworks, the result of a careful recovery process, allows for an in-depth exploration of the historical, economic, and technological role of the factory in the panorama of the steel industry of the time.

Abstract: This study examines the implementation of a "local currency" in Riace, an initiative ai... more Abstract: This study examines the implementation of a "local currency" in Riace, an initiative aimed at facilitating purchases for migrants hosted in the community. Through the use of paper vouchers, issued by the Municipality and convertible into euros once European funding arrived, an attempt was made to speed up the time between the allocation of funds and their disbursement to support the local economy. The analysis highlights the challenges linked to the certainty of voucher conversion and underlines the importance of transparent and efficient management of these initiatives to maximize their impact on the territory. Furthermore, the report explores other similar experiences in other Italian cities, demonstrating that potential good practices exist. However, it is critical that these initiatives are implemented correctly to achieve meaningful results. Therefore, we underline the importance of developing an informed and genuine political interest in such projects in order to fully exploit their potential.

This research is based on a rigorous exploration of archival sources and field investigation, allowing us to outline the historical and economic events of significant importance that have left an indelible mark on the industrial history of Southern Italy.

Il presente studio tende ad esaminare le miniere e ferriere della vallata dello Stilaro e il proc... more Il presente studio tende ad esaminare le miniere e ferriere della vallata dello Stilaro e il processo siderurgico antico. Sino alla fine del XIX secolo, il territorio calabrese, in cui insistono i comuni di Bivongi, Pazzano, Stilo, Fabrizia, Mongiana, Guardavalle, costituiva uno dei piu importanti centri siderurgici e minerari dell’Italia meridionale. In varie epoche furono attive: tre fabbriche d’armi, trenta ferriere e due fonderie. In questi opifici venina lavorata la limonite, estratta dai giacimenti, ubicati nei monti: Stella, Mammicomito, Petracca e Consolino. Ai nostri giorni, sulla scorta di nuove conoscenze scaturite dallo studio di alcuni documenti d’archivio e da nuovi ritrovamenti archeologici, si sta delineando, sempre piu, la convinzione che le attivita metallurgiche, nell’area, possano ricondursi a tempi ben piu antichi.

Il presento studio analizza la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana evidenziando le t... more Il presento studio analizza la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana evidenziando le tracce tangibili dell'impegno lavorativo. Situato nel cuore delle Serre Calabre, costituisce un rilevante esempio di insediamento minerariosiderurgico dell'Ottocento. Costruito nel 1771 come risultato della necessità pratica di trasferire gli impianti di lavorazione da Stilo, il villaggio cresceva nel corso degli anni e offriva alloggio, istruzione, assistenza sanitaria e intrattenimento ai lavoratori. Gli imprenditori svolgevano un ruolo centrale nell'organizzazione delle fabbriche e nella vita dei lavoratori, cercando di migliorare le loro condizioni. L'elaborato si propone di analizzare e ricostruire la fondazione del villaggio siderurgico di Mongiana durante il primo periodo borbonico, compreso tra il 1734 e il 1799. Utilizzando fonti di archivio pertinenti, verrà approfondito lo sviluppo delle Ferriere nel decennio francese, ovvero nel periodo compreso tra il 1806 e il 1815. Inoltre, verrà visualizzato il secondo periodo borbonico, che va dal 1815 al 1860, al fine di comprendere ulteriormente l'evoluzione e l'impatto delle attività siderurgiche in quel contesto temporale.

Il carattere evolutivo di aspetti sociali e delle consuetudini familiari del luogo consente di seguire lo sviluppo della società aggiornando continuamente il quadro evolutivo dei bisogni cangianti del popolo. Nel saggio sono stati presi in esame gli atti dei notai stilesi attualmente custoditi nella sezione di Locri dell'Archivio di Stato di Reggio Calabria. Ha proceduto attraverso una campionatura dei principali notai, attivi a Stilo tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo. Queste fonti archivistiche sono state esaminate in maniera incrociata per ricostruire un quadro degli usi familiari locali in materia di contratti matrimoniali e di successioni testamentarie, e più in generale del rapporto culturale con i beni materiali e con la loro funzione anche dopo la morte.
