Following a philological-comparative approach, I tried to identify the cultural and literary models (Norse, insular, continental, pagan and Christian) that could have contributed to defining the demonic imagery expressed by Wace in his work.

This essay aims at reconstructing the propagandistic origin of a motive permeating Medieval Europ... more This essay aims at reconstructing the propagandistic origin of a motive permeating Medieval European literature, that of the "burning walnuts", attested in its oldest version in the legend of the visit to Constantinople of Duke Robert the Magnificent of Normandy. This study also focuses on the analysis of the Norse rewritings of this topos, transfused into the Scandinavian literary tradition through the human and cultural exchange between Norman civilization and the people of the Far North.

The essay aims to explain – by proceeding to the cross-study of Medieval Latin, Byzantine, German... more The essay aims to explain – by proceeding to the cross-study of Medieval Latin, Byzantine, Germanic, Italo and Gallo-Romance literary sources – the complex intertwining of arguments, archetypes and propaganda motifs underlying the surface of the topos of the golden horseshoes associated with the pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Duke Robert of Normandy and to illustrate the ways in which this anecdote – also present in the Old Norse Saga Sigurðar Jórsalafara – could have reached Iceland through the decisive mediation of the Norman culture.
