I am a junior professor in Comparative Studies in Medieval Literature at the University of Würzburg. From 2008 to 2015, I studied German, philosophy and biology at the Universities of Tübingen and Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. During my studies I was a fellow of the Evangelisches Studienwerk e.v. Villigst and the DAAD. After my graduation (state examination), I worked from 2015 to 2019 as a research assistant in the CRC 923 'Threatened Orders – Societies under Stress' . I was part of a project that researched pre-modern plays and sermons and their mutual influences. In February 2020 I finished my doctorate at the universities of Tübingen and Paris 3: Sorbonne Nouvelle (Cotutelle) with a thesis on "Persuasionsstrategien im vormodernen Theater (14.-16. Jh.). Eine semiotische Analyse religiöser Spiele im deutschen und französischen Sprachraum" (“Persuasion Strategies in Premodern Theatre (14th–16th Century). A Semiotic Analysis of German and French Religious Plays”. From 2019 to 2021, I worked at the University of Freiburg (i. Br.) in the Reinhart-Koselleck-Project “Diachronic Narratology”. Between January 2022 and April 2023, I returned to the CRC 923 as a postdoctoral researcher.

In the 16th century, the social and political upheavals brought about by the Reformation also res... more In the 16th century, the social and political upheavals brought about by the Reformation also resonated on the French scene. This article analyses three ‘polemical’ morality plays as influential vectors of «threat communication» in the context of the French Wars of Religion. Catholic theatre is nowadays less known and less studied than the many ‘Protestant’ plays that polemicized against the Roman Church. By analysing three anti-Protestant plays, this contribution aims to put into perspective the Catholic response to the growing influence of reformist currents in the city of Rouen in the mid-16th century. L’Eglise et le Commun builds a threatening scenario of an elusive enemy in its own ranks while Hérésie, Simonie, Force, Scandale, Procès et l’Eglise and Le Maître d’Ecole show and condemn in a more concrete way the actions of the denominational opponent. Surprisingly, some of the plays contain many comic elements, while laughter does not seem, at first glance, to be the appropriate response to a threat. The article aims to highlight the functions of laughter in the «threat communication» of the anti-protestant morality plays.

Pourquoi, contrairement aux pièces anticatholiques contemporaines, ce jeu eschatologique évite-t-il presque complètement la polémique ouverte contre la confession adverse ? L’article analyse les stratégies théâtrales employées pour défendre la foi catholique dans L’Antéchrist de Lucerne afin de montrer que l’objectif était d’attirer un large public catholique et protestant. Il s’agissait de renforcer l’identité collective des Lucernois catholiques mais aussi d’influencer les spectateurs venus des régions réformées.

Im kleinen Universum der Universitätsstadt ist das ehemalige Bankgebäude, das heute als selbstverwaltetes Jugendhaus genutzt wird, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein bunter Hund. Die stetig anwachsende Zahl kreativer Graffitis hat ihm nicht nur lokale Berühmtheit, sondern auch das Interesse der Tübinger Germanistik eingebracht. Im Fokus steht der vieldeutige Slogan "Freiheit stirbt mit Sicherheit". Generationen von Studentinnen und Studenten haben sich den Kopf darüber zerbrochen, ob Freiheit und Sicherheit gemeinsam sterben, die Sicherheit der Freiheit Tod ist oder ob gar das Ableben der Freiheit als gewiss gelten muss. Selbst wenn vor dem Hintergrund des politisch aktiven Jugendhauses nicht alle Interpretationen gleich plausibel sind, eröffnet die Ambiguität des Satzes, die auf der möglichen lokalen und temporalen Lesart der Präposition mit basiert 1 , ein erweitertes Bedeutungsspektrum, das prinzipiell nicht auf eine Ebene eingrenzbar ist. Durch seine überraschende Mehrdeutigkeit lädt der Slogan zum Spiel mit den Möglichkeiten sprachlicher Formen und zur Reflexion über die Sprache selbst ein.
