The text analyses the enforcement of special economic zones policies in the economic development strategies of most countries around the world. The discussion describes the use of China\u27s economic growth model in India along with the social and environmental risks brought by the effects of liberalisation. A qu...

V članku so izpostavljeni kritični vidiki post-jomtienske faze v Indiji in nekateri pomembni primeri ljudskega izobraževanja in kritične pedagogike, ki so jih razvile različne izobraževalne iniciative, institucije, nevladne organizacije in gibanja. S primerom sociolo...

Z metodo odprtega kodiranja in identificiranjem preliminarnih tematskih kategorij ter prek selektivnega kodiranja in sintetiziranja konceptualnih kategorij je bilo ugotovljeno, da so udeleženci fokusne skupine svoje družbeno okolje opredeljevali prek socioloških vidikov in societalnih vrednot, najranljivejših populacij (kamor so prištevali tudi starejše odrasle) in preživetvenih strategij ter ustvarjalnosti kot prispevka starejših občanov k razvoju skupnosti. The project explored how inactive ageing affects the quality of life, health and well-being of men aged 60 years or more, and how (self-)exclusion from the community can lead to social and psychological ‘death’. The article highlights four interconnected themes which are inadequately, insufficiently, or simply not addressed by national institutions and often also the non-governmental sector in the researched countries. The themes – the pluralisation of transitions to retirement and ageing; absent bodies and invisible lives; hegemonic masculinity and gendered experiences; and community-based learning, action and spaces – are supported by well-defined issues and obstacles preventing men from integrating into the community and are completed with suggesti...

Author is analysing the theoretical definitions of solidarity economics that have experienced a renaissance across all continents in recent decades and consider to what extent the new emerging form of alternative economics is transformative and emancipatory in relation to the neoliberal market economy. Trough a clear distinction and unification of two similar but different concepts – the solidarity economy and the social economy – author identifies compatibilities and antagonisms of these two concepts and the implications arising from this. On the basis of selected historical insights into the practices of solidarity economics, author finds out how the concept evolved, to where it came, and define the most pressing »absences« in the genealogy of the concept itself. In addition to identifying the contents, goals and potentials of solidarity economics the conclusions bring critical consideration and re-examination of those starting points and assumptions of the concept, which could be strengthened both in theoretical knowledge and in the production of reappropriation of the common or commonalism.

Marta Gregorčič Ženska, ki stoji za mitom Izris sodobnih zoperstavljanj globalnemu korporativnemu plenjenju Abstract The Woman Behind the Myth An Outline of Contemporary Struggles Against Global Corporate Plundering The article deals with women from the global South who have been confronting the most inhuman neoliberal corporate plundering for decades. With the mobilization of lawless and excluded social groups they have been creating new socialites, emergences and potentias in their autonomous and self-determing communities. The purpose of the article is to awaken the sensitivity to some of the topics that are significant for the understanding of the complexity and heterogeneity of the contemporary antagonisms but in fact absent from Europocentric academic discussions on counter-hegemonic movements. With the examples of life histories, biographies, testimonies and struggles of three women – Berta Cáceres, Domitila Barrios de Chúngara and Sudha Bharadwaj – new epistemologies and some emerging practices of the counter-hegemonic global South are identified. This contribution shows what women – the global strugglers against corporate plundering are talking to us and learning us with their lives. The Transformative Potentials of Learning Practices in Participatory Budgets: A Comparative Study... more The Transformative Potentials of Learning Practices in Participatory Budgets: A Comparative Study A comparative study of transformative learning of the participatory budget creators in Maribor and the Argentinian city Rosario identifies which learning transformations appear in participatory democratic processes. It derives from the extensive qualitative research carried out in Maribor (Gregorčič and Jelenc Krašovec, 2016; 2017) and in Rosario (Lerner and Schugurensky, 2007). The study shows the possibilities of scientific operationalization of self-transformation achievements in relation to existing theoretical definitions and methodological approaches, as well as assessing the assesment of such community practices for profound social changes. The analysis results from transformative learning as a two-way pedagogy (Santos, 2005) and the reciprocity of participatory democratic processes and transformative learning for self-transformation (Schugurensky, 2002). To that end it highlights the wider implications of privileged learning sites that are unintentionally and unpredictably creating innovative grassroots participatory budgets examples. It is based on the assumption that SDC assemblies, being safe and trustworthy, are very powerful spaces for behavioural and values exchange between generations and also for social and political engagement, having a capacity for critical, informed and caring citizenry of all ages (Pinnington & Schugurensky, 2009). Our case study is focused on the social dimensions of acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes and practices, as identified by Schugurensky (2006; 2013), and on features of social learning (Serrat et al., 2016). In an embedded single-case study design with multiple units (Yin, 2012) we conducted 12 interviews and a focus group. Among interviewees, six were retired, four were employed, one was a student and one was unemployed; they were members of first, second and the third generations. Results show that besides knowledge, skills and practices gained through intergenerational political and social actions in SDC assemblies, value and attitudinal changes (also regarding 402 Sabina Jelenc Krašovec & Marta Gregorcˇicˇage) are among the most important outcomes of the democratic participatory process.

The case study is contextualised through the social unrest in Iceland and the e-PB initiative of the Citizens Foundation (CF) in Reykjavík, from which, in addition to other cases, such as Porto Alegre, Brazil, active citizens in Maribor drew knowledge and examples of good practices. The social and learning practices in the participatory democracy process were researched in five stages; however, mainly the findings from the semi-structured interviews are highlighted in this article. Our case study confirmed, similarly to the pioneer work of Schugurensky and his colleagues, that interviewees acquired instrumental and technical knowledge about politics and citizenship; developed analytical, leadership, and deliberative skills; and, even more importantly, translated the new understanding, abilities, and dispositions into new social practices and behaviours. It revealed that participatory democracy provides a privileged learning site, because, in addition to a variety of civic and learning virtues, citizens also developed the capacity for co-governance and influencing political decisions.

Based on reflections from her own biographical research on revolutionary movements in the Global South and oppressed and silenced groups, the author has identified the characteristics of testimonies which she has positioned in relation to Santos' Epistemologies of the South. The research is reflected through the author's contemplation of her fieldwork over the last ten years and through examples of literary written records which have empowered social emancipation; it shows how the pedagogy of testimonies can be used innovatively in learning and research as well as how testimonies can also make a fruitful contribution to much-needed considerations on silenced epistemologies in the classroom and in society.
