- “Growing Up Behind Barbed Wire” provides a comparative close reading of government-created phot... more - “Growing Up Behind Barbed Wire” provides a comparative close reading of government-created photography and the underutilized archives of Japanese-American-produced images to situate the meanings of childhood as an ideologically contested visual site during the World War II incarceration of Japanese-Americans. Images of Japanese-American children demonstrate how photography operated to obscure and reveal how a corp of photographers regarded race, childhood, and the visual construction of the Japanese-American body. This paper offers three main contentions; first, a diverse corps of photographers reproduced a documentary tradition that uses children to cast a moralistic lens that critiques government austerity. Second, they demonstrated the ability of Japanese American communities to reintegrate into American life through performances of what I term "cultural citizenship.” Finally, the paper also argues that children are central to the maintenance of the visual mythology of the Japanese-American family during their imprisonment.
