The report describes the practices used in supervising instructors in these schools, and compares these practices with best practices from the theoretical and empirical literature on the topic, as well as with practices used in language schools external to the SOF IAT community. The findings are organized into five main categories: (1) language learners and the language learning environment, (2) responsibilities of the instructional supervisor, (3) the relationship between instructional supervisors and instructors, (4) strategies and methods for instructional supervision, and (5) classroom observation and assessments. The study recommends that task and knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) analyses be conducted in each of the SOF IAT language schools, and that additional research be conducted to examine the results of effecti...

This report synthesizes information across three sources: (1) the current literature, (2) the perspectives of experts (i.e., academicians, researchers) and SOF language program stakeholders, and (3) an original empirical study investigating the relationship between training duration and post-training language proficiency in the SOF environment. The four main elements of foreign language training that can be leveraged to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of SOF IAT are as f...

Integrating original empirical work (both quantitative and qualitative) from adult, military learners and instructors with published practices and research, keys for leveraging team teaching in various formats are explored. These two sources of information yield evidence-based practice recommendations.

This session provided research-based recommendations for how to facilitate foreign language instructor development. Research presented in this session combined comprehensive literature reviews, interviews with foreign language program administrators and instructor supervisors, and analysis of archival data to identify the behaviors and skills required for effective supervision of foreign language instructors in an adult, military learning context. Findings from this study were also discussed in terms of how these best practices could be applied to other learning contexts, such as primary or secondary education programs. Synthesis of information from these sources helped attendees effectively develop and mentor foreign language instructors.
