An examination of language use patterns shows how parents framed their requests and how they manifested signs of “doing gender” in the process. The fathers’ and mothers’ letters differed in length, common verb use, negation word use, pronoun use, preposition use, and locus on three summary variables (analytic, authenticity, and clout). They did not differ in the use of words associated with general affect, positive emotion, negative emotion, anger, and anxiety, thus exemplifying how the practice of “doing gender” can be circumstantial. The findings underscore the importance of studying the rhetorical aspects of parental advice-seeking communications and illustrate how language and gender i...

We examine the effects of a participatory research training program developed and executed by a data librarian and administered to library employees at a large academic library. The program aimed to improve research skills and increase research productivity. This study employs a survey within a concurrent mixed methods methodological framework to examine the outcomes of the training program. Our findings show that the program served as a low-cost, short-term, effective method of teaching data collection and quantitative analysis that increased participants’ knowledge of the research process, boosted their research confidence, and provided valuable data on library services for use by the participants and library administration.

With increased age, sleep is harder to initiate and maintain. Currently, over two million grandparents have become primary caregivers to their grandchildren and are at risk for poor sleep outcomes. Research shows that grandparent caregivers are at risk for depression due to poor sleep quality. Thus, this study aimed to identify the sleep quality of custodial grandparents to gain a better understanding of sleep patterns during COVID-19 in 2020. Thirty-four custodial grandparents were recruited from the Georgia Division of Aging Kinship Care Support Groups from September through October 2020. Participants were between 42 to 78 years old with a mean age of 57. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Stata statistical software was used to analyze the relationship between the sleep quality subscales. Results showed a significant positive relationship for custodial grandparents between sleep quality and daytime dysfunction (χ2=25...

One in four adults in the U.S. lives with a disability with the highest percentage of disabilities reported in the South. Quality sleep is integral for overall wellbeing and is altered with age. Sleep complaints of older adults are associated with multiple adverse health outcomes such as dementia, stroke and obesity. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between disability and sleep quality amongst custodial grandparents during the COVID-19, Fall 2019 in Georgia. Thirty-four custodial grandparents were recruited from the Georgia Division of Aging Kinship Care Support Groups, ages 42 to 78, with most identifying as African American. Disability status and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were measured. Results showed a significant negative relationship for custodial grandparents’ disability stat...

I... more The climate and culture of treatment for clients with serious mental illness (SMI) are complex. In this study, we aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of the treatment environment using a network typological approach to measure the local treatment context and assess its implications on the perceived quality of clients’ relationships with their care providers. We use in-depth egocentric network data from clients with SMI in community mental health centers and state psychiatric hospitals from the Indiana Mental Health Services and HIV Risk Study ( N = 417). Clustering analysis identifies five unique and distinct network types: supportive, sparse, diverse, clinical, and treatment-focused. Weighted least squares regressions reveal clients in networks with high amounts of support predict a more trusting working alliance, whereas care-oriented networks predict a less trusting alliance. Our findings underscore the need to consider the local network context in studies of the quality of c...
