A sample of twelve listed bank holding companies is examined over a ten year period (1996-2005). All the sample banks are offering Islamic banking products, in addition to conventional products. Based on the panel data analysis, separate board leadership structure, higher proportion of independent directors, smaller board size, lower director ownership, higher institutional ownership and higher block ownership seem to have lower risk. The study applies the agency theory. All findings except director ownership are in line with theoretical expectation. It might be due to three main reasons as discussed in the paper.

This includes the perception of some Muslim societies towards Islamic banking operations, accounting issues and particularly, in regard to the industries product portfolio. In the case of Indonesia – but perhaps also in the larger context – there has been concerns raised about the imbalance of product portfolio [Adnan 2003; 2005, Tohirin 2003, Muhammad 2005]. It is commonly known for example that the murabaha product has dominated product portfolio since the beginning of the industry’s operations. Although this issue is not related to fiqh concepts, many are concerned that product portfolio imbalance will cause an unevenness between the monetary or financial sector and the real sector of businesses. In other words, the situation will not reflect the notion of an Islamic economics concept, which is concerned about balance and harmony among all economic sectors. This paper offers a solution to this particular problem, with a view towards implementation of an Islamic economy.

The research applies a case study method. It is focused only on a single company with around two hundred branches nationwide. The data were mainly collected by deep interviews and observations. All data are analysed qualitatively. An interactive model as suggested by Miles and Huberman (1994) is adopted. The study found that this company has a very distinctive method not only for its financial matters, but also the operations in general. The operations seem to apply the mixed musharaka and mudharaba principles; although the Islamic term is hardly used, the values applied are Islamic in nature. The business model can offer widely that there is another model of business which promises the power of sharing among the participants.

However, these institutions are numerous and widespread all over the world, particularly in the countries where Muslim population is in existence. The attention to awqaf institutional development just took place in the last three to five years back. It is perhaps, why the development of these institutions seemed to be left far behind than other Islamic institutions. It is undeniable that the hidden strengths of awqaf institutions in solving the problems of the ummah, such as education, health and poverty eradication are so promising. However, this power will not be possible to explore, unless a variety of efforts are done. Among the important aspects that are less considered are the accounting issues which are strongly related to transparency, accountability and good governance. Needless to say accounting is one of critical points must be linked in the muam...

There are about a hundred Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions currently in the world. It is useful and interesting to know how Islamic banks differ from the Western (Traditional) style bank? This paper surveys the differences between the twostyle of bank. A comparison is made of the origin of each style of bank. their development, the types of products and services they offer: their organization and their financial statements. The paper concludes that the basic difference is in the treatment of interest. But this in tum generates some other differences. Interestingly, in the sense of accounting concepts and practices, it seems that both styles are not significantly different. However. a close examination of this seems to be interesting and is the focus of study, because each style of bank has developed with dif...
