Guitarists are often diagnosed with median neuritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis, intersection syndrome, digital flexor
tenosynovitis, stenosing tenosynovitis, and De Quervain’s syndrome as a result
of faulty right-hand technique. The causes generally converge to the lack of warm-ups, compression of the forearm muscles, excessive wrist flexion, extension, or sideways deviations, and repetitive movements with simultaneous muscle tension or strained positions. Based on evidence, this article provides technical suggestions that reduces tension and theoretically decreases the chances of playing-related injuries.

A literature review shows that the causes of these injuries are all related to excessive flexion or extension of the wrist, exaggerated bending of the elbow, prolonged periods of maximal supination of the wrist and large amounts of tensioned positions. The article analyzes guitar left-hand technique and proposes technical and postural approaches that address these causes and theoretically decrease the risk of playing-related injuries.

Most of the risk originates from poor sitting posture. This article explores the literature available on the issues of traditional classical guitar sitting position and shows that the footstool, while widely used is not ideal, and that ignored aspects such as chair and placement of the music stand play a big role in achieving a neutral sitting position. Based on the evidence available, the article presents solutions that address common postural deficiencies in classical guitarists.

However, it is not entirely clear if they are effective or not, or how musicians should employ these strategies in their practicing routine. This article investigates the studies available in order to conclude whether these practices are worth it or not and concludes that while warm-up routines, as well as taking breaks or rests during practice, can be efficient on injury prevention, the benefits of stretching before, during or after practice has yet to be validated.

Numbers published in multiple studies related to the musician’s health shows that the incidence of injuries can be as high as 93%. Aggravating the situation, injured musicians tend to neglect professional help and decline the necessary recovery measures. Rest is one of the most recommended measures in the treatment of injuries. This leads musicians to ignore treatment citing financial strains, fear of losing a job and the necessity to keep practicing. Analyzed data on incidence, treatment and consequence of injuries in musicians lead to the conclusion that the best way to preserve their skills is through prevention methods.

Studies of occupational problems affecting musicians from early stages through their immersion into the music business focus on detailed analysis of the injuries, treatment methods, and resources for prevention. The integration of disciplines that approach such issues have been acknowledged as enriching college music curricula by offering support to teachers and performers, as well as students in an interdisciplinary perspective. The objective of this article is to describe and analyze the main injuries affecting the physical and psychological health of musicians, and its relationships to the musical learning and musical performance based on the data published in the field of occupational health of this professional class.

Authors give statistics as high as 93% when discussing the injury rate among instrumentalists. As guitar is one of the instruments listed with the highest incidence of playing-related injuries, this work addresses the types of injuries to which musicians, including guitarists, are prone, as well as their causes and treatment. Musicians often tend to neglect proper treatment for playing
related injuries, which leads to the conclusion that investing time in prevention methods is the best choice in regards to injuries. The efficacy of common routines for injury prevention such as warming-up, taking breaks, among others, has proven statistically to be successful. Studies show that warm-up routines and periodic breaks from music practice seem to be effective against playing-related injuries; the benefits of stretching, however, remain controversial. Since some of the injuries investigated are preventable to a large extent through technical adjustments, informed suggestions for guitarists are included. Though the solutions presented are not necessarily the only ones available, they are supported by studies in performing arts medicine.
