John Burkhardt
Dr. Burkhardt has expertise and formal training in both medicine and higher education. His formal training includes an MD, a master’s degree in Higher Education with a focus in Medical Education, and his current work in a PhD in Higher Education. Dr. Burkhardt has a broad background in multiple levels of the education process, including course work on the K-16 pipeline, higher education, and professional education. He has further focused his studies in a doctoral program on educational policy analysis and quantitative methodology in educational research. Dr. Burkhardt’s larger research agenda focuses on increasing the evidence basis for decision-making in medical education in areas such as recruitment, admissions, resident selection, curriculum, and assessment. He is interested in better aligning medical education to more fully meet societal needs that are the responsibility of physicians and to move the profession toward auctioneer representation that is more consistent with the general public. The goal of his research agenda is to study and improve the mismatch between our profession’s stated goals of inclusion and preparation of physicians to meet societal needs in areas such as primary care and underserved medical populations particularly in manner in which we select, recruit, and train medical students and residents.
