In relation to that, four ethnographic items are arranged in a structure, the “DIMA tensor,” that would, at least for a significant part, describe political dynamics in the said geographical area. Here I highlight two issues less discussed in the article's comments. First, Stroeken’s use of the tensor concept does not do due justice to its original backgrounds. Second, and related to that, concerning the aspect of invariants in structuralism, the association between tensors and structuralism may be different from what appears in the article and some comments.

Excerpts: The book sets itself he task to investigate the ways people’s homes expose the family’s journeys and positioning in colonial Mozambique, in relation to their original identity, life in Mozambique and the present situation in Portugal [...] the argument flows very naturally from the general considerations in the beginning to the experiences of the studied families across time. The book very fortunately presents ample quotations at some length of interview material. [...] Chapter Two, on historical backgrounds, might have been more elaborate [...] Overall, however, the book gives a satisfactory resolution to the mentioned task settings
Paul’s Collection, the Nazarite Ritual and 2 Maccabees: James’ Masterstroke as Applied Game Theory in Jerusalem, 2024
This essay argues that Paul's collection and the sponsorship of the Nazarite ritual in Jerusalem ... more This essay argues that Paul's collection and the sponsorship of the Nazarite ritual in Jerusalem concern an identical historical object. Some reflections on the relationship between the collection/ritual and doctrinal issues are presented. It is argued that (a) Paul was in a subordinate position relative to the Jerusalem leaders (especially James); and (b) that the collection Paul performed amongst his own converts served to undermine his message. Game theory is applied to show how the Jerusalem leaders used the collection to pin down Paul and neutralize the latter's insubordination. A probable parallel with a collection in 2 Maccabees is drawn. The leaders' (especially James') application of Paul's collection can then be appreciated as a brilliant masterstroke.

I show that their argument is built on a certain interpretation of the mathematical modeling applied which is not likely.

This is know as the "Liberal Paradox". I show that Sen's argument is based on a confused handling of different interpretations of "liberal values" and "liberalism" across the two chapters 6 and 6* of his (1970) book. The idea of "liberal values" is only inconsistent with universal domain, and this is not a paradoxical result.

They may have some capability to use symbols to reach certain goals. But the repertoire is fairly limited. Moreover, there appears to be no blurring of levels in communication. They never have conversations about their culture, while this is a common occurrence in humans. Set theory with the idea of anti-foundation can straightforwardly describe this circumstance.

Inheritance and Succession Practices, and Sociopolitical Stakes in Times of Decentralization in Marracuene, Mozambique. Uppsala: Uppsala Universitet, 2022. Anthropos 2023(1): 259-260.
Apart from a study about legal pluralism and inheritance problematics, the book is also a source of information about the history of Marracuene District and its present-day political situation. The work is recommended reading for those interested in contradictory local legal realities where the national legislation gives an appearance of smoothness.

André van Dokkum’s Nationalism and Territoriality in Barue and Mozambique shows that this view is not universally true. The precolonial Kingdom of Barue in what is now Mozambique showed characteristics generally associated with nationalism, giving the country great resilience against colonial encroachment. Postcolonial Mozambique, on the other hand, has so far not succeeded in creating national coherence. The former anti-colonial organization and now party in power Frelimo has always stressed national unity, but only under its own guidance, paradoxically producing disunity.

The thesis is defended that the precolonial Kingdom of Barue (present-day Mozambique) can be analysed with the terminology of nationalism. While there have been isolated comments as such in the literature, a specific theoretical, conceptual reflection on nationalism in Barue has so far been absent. Conversely, precolonial Barue does not figure in theoretical books about nationalism. One task of the present book is to provide for a theoretically and historically informed understanding of precolonial Barue as a nation-state. On the other hand, nationalism can be found associated with postcolonial Mozambique quite casually in the literature. However, nationalism in postcolonial Mozambique is far more difficult to establish than in precolonial Barue. A second task of the book then is to explain how the indeterminacy of Mozambican nationalism came about, and a third to investigate its consequences for political stability.
