It also elucidates how the semantic differences between the selected Qur'ānic pairs are reflected in the English translations. Three pairs of Qur'anic near-synonyms are chosen for this study. The collected data are qualitatively analyzed based on the RC-S approach by Murphy. The findings show that some semantic differences exist between the selected pairs of Qur'ānic near-synonyms, and some semantic differences are not reflected in the English translations. An example of the investigated Qur'anic near-synonyms is the pair of جوع and مسغبة (hunger). The findings reveal that مسغبة (famine) denotes extreme and severe hunger of a large number of people. It is also associated with weakness, fatigue, exhaustion, and thirst. However, its near-synonym جوع (hunger) is more general and does not have the same semantic features as مس غبة (famine). It is shown that translating both words by Arberry as 'hunger' is inappropriate since the semantic differences between them are not reflected in the English translation. This study presents recommendations that could be useful for translators, readers, and interested researchers.

This study investigates the translation of cultural items in The Forty Hadiths by Imam Al-Nawawi. It adopted the qualitative approach for selecting and analyzing the translation of culturallybound items of the selected Prophet Mohammed's hadiths posted on the Web by Sunnah.com. Moreover, it used Lambert and Van Gorp's (1985) method to examine the translations and Vinay and Darbelnet's translation strategies to identify the procedures selected by the translators to convey the meanings of the cultural contents. The findings indicated that the translators implemented various procedures to convey the cultural meanings of the hadiths. However, whenever confronted with difficult categories, due to the lexical, syntactic and cultural differences between Arabic and English, they were inconsistent in their choices of translation procedures. Furthermore, they did not succeed in rendering the aesthetic features of the Prophet's utterances, an issue that is yet to be addressed by researchers. The present study provides implications which could be useful for translators, especially translators of religious texts.

Halliday. It shows that news structures are working apparatuses of ideology and store meanings which are not always obviously recognized by the readers. Through a comparative analysis of two Yemeni English newspapers with seemingly opposing ideologies, the study uncovers how these ideologies are represented in a different way in these printed media with regards to southern demonstrations in 2009. Though both newspapers are not with those seeking secession, the study aims to reveal how the two newspapers represent events to serve its purpose and ideology, blaming some for such actions. It also shows that these printed materials highly mystify the agency of processes by using various strategies such as nominalization and passivization. That is to say, critical text analyses reveal how the choices used by writers enable them to manipulate the realizations of agency and power in the representation of action to produce particular meanings that are not always explicit for all readers. Such analysis will reveal and unmask the hidden ideologies KEYWORDS

It aims at identifying the contextual meanings of the Qur'ānic near-synonyms based on different exegeses of the Holy Qur'ān. Then, it explains the semantic differences that exist between the Qur'ānic pair and how such semantic differences are reflected in two English translations of the Holy Qur'ān. Besides, it highlights the meanings of the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books) in different Qur'ānic contexts and how the various senses of this lexical item are transferred to English. The study adopts the RC-S approach as a theoretical framework for data analysis. It also employs the qualitative approach for collecting and analyzing the data of the study. The exegeses of the Holy Qur'ān are consulted to identify the semantic differences between the Qur'ānic near-synonyms as well as the meanings of the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books). The findings reveal that there are some semantic differences between the selected Qur'ānic near-synonyms and that such semantic differences are not reflected in the English translations. The findings also show that the polysemous lexical item alkutub (the books) and its singular formal-kitāb (the book) are literally translated in some Qur'ānic contexts. The study provides recommendations for readers as well as translators especially the translators of the Holy Qur'ān.

It seeks to identify the meanings of two sets of near-synonyms in their Qur’anic contexts based on the Qur’ānic exegeses. It also highlights the differences in meaning that exist among these near-synonyms and the extent to which the semantic differences among those near-synonyms are preserved in translation. This study is grounded on the RC-S approach by Murphy as a theoretical framework for data analysis. The obtained results show that there are some differences in meaning among the chosen near-synonyms and that some of such nuances are not preserved in the English and French translations. Thus, the study recommends that the differences in meaning among the near-synonyms should be identified before translating the Qur’ānic texts, and subsequently, the identified differences should be reflected in the translation.

Initially, it aimed to highlight the contextual meanings of the selected sets of Qur'ānic near-synonyms in the light of the exegeses of the Holy Qur'ān. Moreover, it explicated the nuances which exist in the selected sets of Qur'ānic near-synonyms in terms of denotative and connotative meanings and how these nuances are reflected in the selected English and French translations of the Holy Qur'ān. The present study adopted the Relation by Contrast Approach to Synonyms by Murphy (2003) as a theoretical framework for the analysis of the selected data. Moreover, it adopted the qualitative approach for selecting and analyzing the data of the study. The findings of the study revealed that there exist some nuances among the selected sets of Qur'ānic near-synonyms and that the nuances among some Qur'ānic near-synonyms are not reflected in the English and French translations. Based on the obtained findings, the study recommends that the translators of the Holy Qur'ān must pinpoint the nuances among the Qur'ānic near-synonyms and then reflect such nuances in their translation. The present study provides recommendations which could be useful for readers as well as translators of the Qur'ān.

Such near-synonyms usually pose a challenge that often presents itself to the translators of the Holy Qur'ān. This study investigates the meanings of near-synonyms and their translation issues in the Qur'ān. It aims to identify the contextual meanings of Qur'ānic near-synonyms based on different exegeses of the Qur'ān. Then, it explains the nuances that exist between the pairs of Qur'ānic near-synonyms and how such nuances are reflected in two English translations of the Qur'ān. The study adopts the Relation by Contrast Approach to Synonyms (RC-S) as a theoretical framework for data analysis. It also employs the qualitative approach for collecting and analyzing the data of the study. Besides, it makes use of different exegeses of the Qur'ān to identify the differences in meaning between each pair of the Qur'ānic nearsynonyms. The analysis of the data reveals that there exist some nuances between the pairs of Qur'ānic near-synonyms in terms of denotative and expressive meaning. The findings also show that the differences in meaning between the pairs of near-synonyms are not reflected in the English translations. Therefore, the study recommends that readers as well as translators should look for nuances between Qur'ānic near-synonyms whenever they find two words with similar meanings in order to perceive the Qur'ānic text appropriately and translatorsshould makeaneffort to reflect the nuances between the pairs of near-synonyms in their translation.

There is a consensus among researchers that these items are termed nearsynonyms (Al-Sowaidi, 2011). Scholars assert that the Qur'ānic synonyms are near-synonyms which refer to words sharing some but not all shades of meaning. More importantly, Al-Sha c rawī (1993) contends that every near-synonym in the Holy Qur'ān has its special meaning that cannot be conveyed by another one in the same context. For instance, the near-synonymous pair حلح ḥalafa and اقسح 'aqsama (swore) have one general equivalent in English. However, there exist some nuances between these near-synonyms in the Qur'ān. Abu acknowledges that the word حلح ḥalafa in the Qur'ān means swore untruthfully and is employed to imply a false oath whereas اقسح 'aqsama means swore truthfully and implicates a true oath. However, these near-synonyms are interchangeably used in Modern Standard Arabic. In fact, the subtle and delicate nuances between the Qur'ānic near-synonyms usually confuse both the reader as well as translator. If a translator fails to realize such nuances between the near-synonyms and misunderstands the original meaning, the near-synonyms will be misinterpreted and consequently the Qur'ānic message will not be appropriately conveyed. ), Abdullah (2003 maintain that the differences between near-synonyms are context-dependent and thus the context should be analyzed in order to provide an adequate and faithful translation for the near-synonyms. Therefore, the Qur'ānic near-synonyms will be studied and analyzed in different Qur'ānic contexts and the exegeses of the Qur'ān will be consulted to account for the nuances between the Qur'ānic near-synonyms and how such nuances are reflected in the English translations.

strategies and achievement among Yemeni EFL university students. It
also identified the differences between high and low achievers in using
language learning strategies. Seventy students were randomly selected
from the fourth level on the basis of their university scores as high and
low achievers. The study adopted the SILL questionnaire developed by
Oxford (1990) to collect the data of the study. The obtained data were
statistically analyzed through SPSS software. The results of the study
showed that the most frequently used strategies of high achievers were
meta-cognitive, compensation and cognitive strategies while the least
frequently used strategies were affective, memory and social Strategies.
On the other hand, the most frequently used strategies of low achievers
were meta-cognitive strategies, the strategies entitled “others” and
affective strategies whereas the least frequently used strategies were
cognitive, social and memory strategies. The findings also revealed
that there was a statistically significant difference between high and
low achievers in the overall use of LLSs in favor of high achievers, there
were significant differences between high and low achievers in using
meta-cognitive, compensation and cognitive strategies in favor of high
