Of all the paint treatments that can be used, rag painting techniques are one of the most subtle and elegant and is the most useful in creating a number of different decorating looks for walls. Ragging creates a broken color technique, using thinned down paint or glaze and brushing it over a base coat, then using paper towels, rags or plastic trash bags while the paint is still damp, you rag some of it off to create a mottled or textured effect on the walls.

A few years ago I wrote about a distressed glazing technique which has a distressed feel to it, a way we developed to add visual texture to your walls that doesn’t like a stock rag rolling. Here, we take this process one step further. The look is both soft and contemporary, works well in urban environments, and is still livable. It’s unique every time, and in this example we’re emphasizing a linear quality, as if the “concrete” was poured into a wood formwork.

I ragged the walls with smears of Chalk Paint® in Country Grey and Paris Grey. Spritzed with a water bottle and then ragged the mixture across the wall doing two foot sections at a time.
