First grade weaving projects

For this 3rd grade lesson (inspired by Art with Mr. E) we began by looking at the art of the Navajo Native Americans of the Southwest. Students learned about their amazing weaving skills (textiles, baskets, etc.) and their frequent use of symmetrical geometric motifs. Weaving by Joy First Graders learned how to weave with yarn on a handmade loom. This is a project that celebrates the art and culture of the Native Americans and teaches us a wonderful technique using patterns. Our finished woven designs hang from twigs that students found outside. Our handmade looms were created out of the cardboard base from water bottle trays and we recycle these looms every year. You need: paper plates acrylic paint: brown, green, red, white brush crepe paper: pink, white, red glue This lesson about the Japanese cherry blossom is an old one, but now the blossoms are made on a paper plate. Too pretty to use for dinner! Branches are painted, leaves too. Not too big, because leaves only grow well when the blossoms are gone. Blossom is partly painted and partly made of crumpled crepe paper.
