For this 3rd grade lesson (inspired by Art with Mr. E) we began by looking at the art of the Navajo Native Americans of the Southwest. Students learned about their amazing weaving skills (textiles, baskets, etc.) and their frequent use of symmetrical geometric motifs. We talked about how having symmetrical designs helped to achieve balance and harmony in their artwork. After viewing several examples, I presented students with our project - radial yarn weaving! :) Anytime my students get to…

I love doing this lesson with lower elementary classes, upper elementary, and have even worked this lesson into some middle school curriculum. It’s a great way to introduce weaving and to continue to grow those fine motor skills. It always turns out BEAUTIFUL! The students are always really proud of

When it comes to art lessons, I'm not much of a repeat offender. Since I like to change up the cultural theme of my art room every year, my lessons usually follow suit. However, I always have my 2nd grade create a circle loom weaving for a coupla reasons: * It's excellent for building fine motor skillz and pumpin' up those wee hand muscles. And what kid doesn't want super strong man-hands? * It's chock full o math connections: measuring, pattern making, long division (okay, maybe not that…

Weaving by Joy First Graders learned how to weave with yarn on a handmade loom. This is a project that celebrates the art and culture of the Native Americans and teaches us a wonderful technique using patterns. Our finished woven designs hang from twigs that students found outside. Our handmade looms were created out of the cardboard base from water bottle trays and we recycle these looms every year. Six slits are cut into both ends of the cardboard and yarn is strung from top to bottom…

Every year I do a weaving project with my students, kindergarten to fourth grade. And when asked at the end of the year what their fave art project in the universe is, weaving always ties first place with clay. And who can blame them? Digging ones hands deep into clay or entangled in a bundle of yarn is just about the best feeling ever, says the art teacher. However, I've grown a little tired of the usual weaving project my third grade students create. So when I saw these amazing tree…

You need: paper plates acrylic paint: brown, green, red, white brush crepe paper: pink, white, red glue This lesson about the Japanese cherry blossom is an old one, but now the blossoms are made on a paper plate. Too pretty to use for dinner! Branches are painted, leaves too. Not too big, because leaves only grow well when the blossoms are gone. Blossom is partly painted and partly made of crumpled crepe paper.
