Don't let crowded buses, adverse weather conditions, or the lack of a personal vehicle stop you from voting this November: Lyft is once again offering a discount on Election Day rides to the polls.
Grab a Lyft-operated car, scooter, or bike on Nov. 3 (between 5am and 11pm local time) and use the promo code 2020VOTE for 50 percent off up to a maximum of $10 on a single ride (Lux excluded) to a polling location anywhere in the US. (Yes, that includes registered dropbox locations in exclusively vote-by-mail states.)
"We know not everyone has access to affordable transportation. So this election season, we're expanding the 'Ride to Vote' work we began in 2018 to offer even more free and discounted rides to the polls," a Lyft blog announcement said. "We're working with When We All Vote and other partners to provide our community with the tools they need to register to vote."
An estimated 15 million eligible voters didn't visit the polls in 2016—largely due to a lack of transportation, according to Tufts University's Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE). Add to that a deadly virus, consolidated voting sites, and staff shortages, and you have many more roadblocks for voters in this year's presidential election. Not if Lyft has anything to do with it, though. Through its LyftUp program, the ride-sharing platform is teaming up with nonprofits across the US to distribute free and discounted trips to those communities "where access to reliable, affordable transportation is limited," the blog said.
New partners include More Than A Vote—which provides access to arena polling locations in five swing states. "Lyft is stepping up to complement the work that More Than A Vote has done to convert sports arenas into safe in-person voting locations," More Than A Vote Executive VP Michael Tyler said in a statement. "By providing access to free and discounted rides to arena voting sites in Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Orlando, Lyft is making it easier for voters in key population centers to safely exercise their right to vote this fall."
Rival Uber this week stepped up its "Get Out the Vote" campaign, joining forces with TurboVote to help users register to vote and request a mail-in ballot through the Uber and Uber Eats applications. The company will also help folks find their polling location and offer discounted rides to and from voting booths.
