Urbanization and industrialization are the main cause of the climate change phenomena all around the world. One of the main problems of urbanization is the increase in growing dependence on automobiles. The main modes of transportation even in the neighborhood area are the private cars because it is the norm of urbanites to use the motorized vehicles rather than to walk. This shows that the planning and design of the neighborhood itself can influence the walkability of the housing area. This paper highlights the implication of walkability towards promoting sustainable urban neighborhood. This research is undertaken to study the challenges faced by the students’ well-being with regards to off-campus living environment. This study requires a key informant interview survey with samples taken from active and prominent off-campus students and also the officers from the Division of Students Affairs, Universiti Teknologi MARA. Findings will show challenges faced by the off-campus students and also the importance placed by the Students Affairs Division in ensuring that the comfort, convenience and safety of the students. Walking behavior can be considered as one of the important factors in measuring the walkability l... more Walking behavior can be considered as one of the important factors in measuring the walkability level in neighborhood. Walking behavior has close interrelationships with walkability. This paper is based on a comparative study of walking behaviour of residents between urban and rural neighborhood. The method used in this study is known as walking distance test and the data were analyzed using the comparative approach. The findings show that there are slight differences of walking speed, walking time and walking speed between residents in the urban and rural neighborhood area. The objective of this study is to investigate the community perceptions on nighttime leisure activities in urban public park. The questionnaire survey is done in Padang (green field) located in the urban center of Shah Alam and Putrajaya using random stratifies technique. There are four types of variable studied related to nighttime leisure in an urban public park namely comforts, conveniences, safety and nighttime leisure. The findings from this study are expected to show a positive perception of nighttime leisure in urban public park towards urban community. This study aims to clarify the explanatory factors and the extent to which those factors help to ... more This study aims to clarify the explanatory factors and the extent to which those factors help to predict the overall residential satisfaction among students living off-campus. This survey utilized a stratified sample of individuals with a questionnaire which was administered to 341 non-resident (NR) students, in seven groups of neighborhoods in the city of Shah Alam. In the analytic process, a Factor Analysis procedure is applied to reduce the data set and to uncover the relationships between various factors and dimensions of the students’ residential satisfaction. There are crimes that had targeted women and children and this had caused much stress to the urban residents. Human responses to these issues are to band together and take control of their environment and this is what happened to the residents in the PKNS flats in Taman Dato’ Harun, Petaling Jaya. They wanted to build a close knit community that involve in community activities and at that same time this community will take care of each other’s safety. This paper revolves around the participation of the residents in the PKNS flats in Taman Dato’ Harun in Rukun Tetangga (RT) with the purpose to increase community involvement and interaction which will eventually lead to a more caring community. With these provisions, there are also frequent complaints from residents regarding the quality of these flats in terms of the building materials used the quality of construction, the sanitary system, the facilities provided, the location, the maintenance along with many social problems. Although this is the case, findings from a study showed that quality of life does exist for residents in this housing environment.

The purpose of this paper is to show the leisure behaviour of the urban community in relation to the setting of the urban public park during the night time. Meanwhile, the literature reviews regarding night time social behaviour and the leisure activities of community in urban outdoor spaces are limited. An improved understanding of the relationship between community leisure and an urban public park setting could be used to influence the development of future public park design, to create night time urban outdoor environments to be more conducive for community leisure activity.

Residents in urban areas are well provided with available facilities to choose from; may that be ... more Residents in urban areas are well provided with available facilities to choose from; may that be for education, grocery shopping, eating, recreation, praying, medical services and others. Residents can choose any of these facilities for their needs and wants. There is however some variance in the choice of facilities for different types of housing areas. The availability of facilities has to some degree affect the satisfaction of residents towards their housing environment. This paper revolves around the findings of a research relating to the level of satisfaction of residents in urban low cost flats towards the availability and accessibility of facilities in two cities. There are a total of eight locations of low cost flats; five of which are located in the city of Shah Alam and three locations in the city of Klang. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to approach this study. Survey data were analysed through the SPSS program and also by the Grounded Theory Analysis. The findings show that the factors of availability and accessibility of facilities play an important role in the level of satisfaction of these residents. Findings also show that that the respondents in Shah Alam are more satisfied compared to those in Klang towards the community facilities domain in their housing area. In general, it can be concluded that residents living in Shah Alam has a higher level of well-being than in Klang where community facilities domain is concerned.

Walkability can be measured through accessibility of urban residents to retail and community facilities provided. The objective of this paper is to understand the perceptions of residents accessibility to community facilities provided. The data was gathered by using the questionnaire survey and analyses using T-test analysis and Kruskal Wallis test. The total number of 381 respondents who live in Precinct 8 and Precinct 9 in Putrajaya were selected to answer the questionnaire survey. The findings of this study will show the qualities of affect the level of walkability in neighbourhood area.

There are two main components in measuring walking experience which are (1) safety and security; (2) convenience and attractiveness. The objective of this paper is to identify the reliability of walking experience variable in relation to walkability in two different urban neighbourhoods in Putrajaya. The data was gathered by using the questionnaire survey and analysed by the internal consistency and correlation analysis. The findings of this study will show the final items used for walking experience in determining the walkability level of a neighbourhood area.

This paper is based on a comparative study of walking behaviour of residents in neighbourhood area to community facilities. The findings show that low cost housing area is within walking distance as compared to the medium cost housing area in reaching the community facilities as there is certain factor that affects the walking behaviour such as distance, catchment area radius, location, accessibility, density and land use pattern. The recommendations for this study are to create flexible catchment area radius, locating community facilities that can maximise walking and creating accessibility standard in neighbourhood area.

This paper sets the question of the suitability and the adequacy of this planning guideline used for the playing spaces in a low cost housing area. The areas of study focus on the types of playing behaviour, the location of playing patterns and the problems arising from the playing activities in this setting. Perhaps the findings will help in improving the guidelines for this important amenity which has not been given due recognition.

Current planning design of playing areas in low cost flats follows very minimal requirements for playing spaces but does not consider population density. The well-being of children are at stake here because the potentiality of crowdedness in the homes and in the playgrounds thus increases the need for a properly planned play spaces in the vicinity of the low-cost flats. This paper is part of a research that evaluates the critical needs children living in low-cost flats with regards to playing space. This paper will discuss the literature, present findings from opinion survey analysis and behaviour mapping on playing spaces.

This survey utilized a stratified sample of individuals with a self-reported questionnaire which was administered to 341 non-resident (NR) students, in seven groups of neighborhoods (differing in various features) in the city of Shah Alam. In the analytic process, a Factor Analysis procedure is applied to reduce the data set and to uncover the relationships between various factors and dimensions show a degree of satisfaction with each level of the residential environment (house, neighborhood and city).
