Being the victims of this disorder, numerous mango varieties having great export potential are not able to enter into the international markets. Its actual cause is yet to be explored. This study aimed to investigate the effect of pre and postharvest application of different calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) salts on postharvest soft nose disorder in mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Samar Bahisht Chaunsa. For preharvest treatment, aqueous solutions of different concentrations of Ca and Mg were sprayed on the mango trees in an orchard 15 days prior to harvest and for postharvest application, fruits were dipped for 10 minutes in various concentrations of Ca and Mg. The fruits were harvested at the mature green stage and stored (12+1oC and 85% RH) for 15 days. At the end of storage, fruits were ripened at ambient temperature (25+1oC, 75-80% RH). Incidence of soft nose ...

Comprehensive studies were conducted on tree and fruit biological factors associated with the fruit harvest maturity of two commercial mango cultivars ('Sindhri' and 'Samar Bahisht Chaunsa') of Pakistan. Under this perspective, investigations were made regarding the relationship of panicle emergence, canopy location, fruit size, fruit surface, shoulder position, sinus fullness, specific gravity, pulp colour, total soluble solid contents and pulp dry matter contents with fruit maturation. A significant relationship was found between panicle emergence and fruit maturation. Specific gravity, pulp colour, total soluble solids and pulp dry matter were identified as being the most important and commercially applicable fruit harvest maturity indicators in both cultivars. Quality at ripe stage was also significantly affected by panicle emergence: the fruit harvested from early emerged pan...

Mango fruit quality, marketability and shelflife are adversely affected by postharvest disease de... more Mango fruit quality, marketability and shelflife are adversely affected by postharvest disease development. The fungicides and plant activators suppress the disease development in fruits and vegetables. These studies were targeted to evaluate the potential of pre and postharvest fungicidal applications and on-tree foliar spray of a plant activator viz. a viz. salicylic acid for postharvest disease management in two commercial mango cultivars (Sindhri & Samar Bahisht Chaunsa) of Pakistan. Alternaria alternata (49.3% in Sindhri; 58.5% in Chaunsa), Phomopsis mangiferae (20.0% in Sindhri; 18.2% in Chaunsa) and Botryodiplodia sp. (3.9% in Sindhri; 2.7% in Chaunsa) were found to be associated with mango fruit stem end rot (SER) under agro-ecological conditions of Punjab, Pakistan. Penecillium sp. and Aspergillus sp. (A. niger & A. flavus) were identified to be associated with secondary infections in the diseased mango fruit tissues. Among the postharvest diseases, fruit side rots were predominant (5-10% affected area) followed by stem end and distal end rots (<5% affected area). Postharvest fungicidal treatments gave significantly better disease control as compared to preharvest applications. Postharvest hot water (52°C; 5min) application of Tecto (1.8 mL/L) a.i. Thiabendazole (TBZ) individually and in combination with Sportak (0.5 mL/L) a.i. Prochloraz (tank mix) resulted in significantly lower postharvest disease development than other pre and postharvest treatments. Pre and postharvest fungicidal applications significantly affected fruit peel color development. Relatively better color development was observed in the fruit subjected to postharvest fungicidal treatments as compared to preharvest applications. Non significant effect of both pre and postharvest fungicidal treatments was observed on biochemical quality attributes (TSS & titratable acidity). On tree foliar sprays of salicylic acid (250, 500 & 1000 µM) in cvs. Sindhri and Samar Bahisht Chaunsa at the time of panicle pushing/flower opening, fruit set and stone hardening could not perform well against postharvest disease development.

Contrast enhanced computed tomography of the mediastinum in our patient revealed this anomalous vessel arising from the aortic arch distal to the left subclavian artery which passed behind the esophagus as it traveled to the right axilla. It had proximal dilated segment compressing the esophagus. The co-existence of this anomaly with aneurysm of abdominal aorta was a unique finding in our patient. ARSA should be taken into account in patients with dysphagia when more common lesions are excluded.

Black brown hyperpigmentation of the mucosae, sunexposed skin, palmar creases and frictional site... more Black brown hyperpigmentation of the mucosae, sunexposed skin, palmar creases and frictional sites (Addisonian pigmentation) is characteristic of Addison disease. However, it can also occur as a paraneoplastic manifestation of tumours like bronchogenic carcinoma. Acquired ichthyosis starts later in life and can also be a paraneoplastic presentation. We report a unique combination of paraneoplastic Addisonian pigmentation and acquired ichthyosis as presenting features in a patient with undiagnosed multiple myeloma. To the best of our knowledge this combination of paraneoplastic dermatosis has not been documented before in multiple myeloma. It is concluded that the presence of more than one suspicious dermatosis may be an indicator of being paraneoplastic requiring necessary work-up.

Rainwater catchment systems can be found in most regions of the world, with adaptations suited to local climatic conditions. Domestic RWH systems have been practiced for thousands of years. Though, RWH has been receiving increased attention worldwide, as an alternative source of non-potable water, its use as potable water supply is very limited and the main reason is obviously the quality of stored rainwater in domestic tanks that believe not to meet the drinking water quality standards. Assessments of roof runoff quality that can be found in the literature do have rather differing result. This paper challenges the viewpoint of rainwater being polluted based on initial microbial examination of stored rainwater in underground cisterns at one of the university in Seoul, Korea. The main objectives were to find out the effects of first flush removal on microbial quality enhancement of rainwater and the effects of different catchment sources on microbial quality of stored rainwater. These results show rainwater suitable even for potable use after very little treatment, in different parts of the world and highlights gaps in our understanding and finally recommend the future research work to further support the conclusion drawn. Microbiological investigations have revealed interesting results and low-cost microbial disinfection such as solar disinfection of stored rainwater for drinking purposes can be viewed as future research.

They presented with signs and symptoms of mechanical cholestasis. Study was conducted to find the etiology, level of obstruction and the extent of the disease together with approaches to either cure the disease or to relieve the symptoms. Curative resection was attempted where possible in all 33 patients but decision of curative resection or palliative bypass with or without liver resection was made per operatively after accessing the level of obstruction and extent of local, parenchymal or vascular infiltration.RESULT: Of the 33 patients studied, 72.73% (n = 24) had cholangiocarcinoma and 27.27% (n = 9) had gall bladder Ca with local bile duct extension. Four different sites of biliary tree (i) common hepatic duct [CHD], (ii) confluence of common hepatic duct [CCHD], (iii) right and left hepatic duct [R&LHD] separately, and (iv) left hepatic duct [LHD] were anastamosed with jejunum. Normal liver functions with complete relieve from symptoms was achieved where CHD or CCHD was anastamosed whereas only a significant decrease was observed when R&LHD and only LHD were anastamosed with jejunum.CONCLUSION: Surgical resection of the tumor together with biliary decompression using different approaches of hepaticojejunostomy is an effective way of managing malignant Hilar bile duct obstruction as well as significantly decreasing the severity of symptoms in irresectable tumours.

During beneficiation of phosphate rocks, huge amounts of oversize phosphate rocks are rejected from crushers. This reject also mostly contains low tricalcium phosphate and high carbonate content. In this study, experiments have been carried out to reduce/eliminate carbonate content by leaching the ground phosphate rock with dilute hydrochloric acid solution. Effects of hydrochloric acid concentration, reaction time, temperature and liquid/solid ratio (vol./wt. basis) on the process have been studied. Under the reaction conditions, some of the apatite may be dissolved to form soluble monocalcium phosphate during the selective leaching. However, by specifying the pH of the process the lime milk can be used to recover the dissolved apatite. It has been observed that upon treatment of the ground rock with dilute hydrochloric acid, the P 2 O 5 percent can be raised up to the industrially acceptable level due to the selective reduction/elimination of calcium carbonate content of the sample, depending on the reaction conditions as well as nature and size of the raw phosphate particles used for analysis.
