While its origin is enigmatic, an association with infectious pathogens including hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been suggested. Here we report nine patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or MM with previous HCV infection, six of whom received antiviral treatment. We studied the evolution of the gammopathy disease, according to anti-HCV treatment and antigen specificity of purified monoclonal immunoglobulin, determined using the INNO-LIA™ HCV Score assay, dot-blot assays, and a multiplex infectious antigen microarray. The monoclonal immunoglobulin from 6/9 patients reacted against HCV. Four of these patients received antiviral treatment and had a better evolution than untreated patients. Following antiviral treatment, one patient with MM in third relapse achieved complete remission with minimal residual disease negativity. For two patients who did not receive antiviral treatment, disease...

For the methodology, we focus on the importance of undertaking a cumulative analysis, based on the collection of as much data as possible and from as many sources as we may find for any item. It is essential for the analysis of the data to be aware of the textual histories of the manuscript sources as well. As a practical application of the results obtained from our analysis, we propose to explore the possibility of redefining the localisation of a manuscript by using the lexical material. Localisation according to lexical material might not always agree with localisation according to orthographic criteria, but even if the lexical choices can be conditioned by different factors, the global study of the lexical information together with the phono-graphological features might help to localise some texts more precisely.

The language of one of the Beryn Scribe's manuscripts was analysed for A Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English, 1380-1450. A Linguistic Profile (number 6040) was made of the language of Alnwick Castle MS 455 and localised to South Essex, near Basildon. This led some researchers on the work of the Beryn Scribe to suppose that the language of this manuscript therefore represents that of its copyist and so to localise the other manuscripts copied by him to this same place. Other scholars have concluded that the Beryn Scribe must have trained in South Essex, but then he migrated to London to work, probably in a 'scriptorium', since the likelihood of such a place for copying books in the Basildon area seemed unlikely to them. They propose further that features of the Beryn Scribe's language can be connected to the emergence of the written 'standard' language of 15th-century London. Our own linguistic investigation of the language of the Beryn Scribe has caused us to question these ideas, and our aim in this chapter is to provide a Note: We are grateful to the staff of the Centre for Research Collections, University of Edinburgh Main Library, for their support during the research for this project. We are also grateful to the British Library for providing digital copies of the manuscripts held there and to the Bodleian Library for letting us take additional photos from their manuscripts in the Mackerras Reading Room; to Cambridge University Library for allowing us to transcribe from manuscript Kk.I.3 and to make images from it; to Christopher Hunwick, archivist at Alnwick Castle Library, and to the staff in Special Collections at Princeton University Library for facilitating our access to on-line digital copies of their manuscripts. Special thanks to Dr. Petra Hofmann, Librarian at Oxford, St. John's College for her help during our visit to the College Library. Likewise, we thank Merja Stenroos and Jacob Thaisen for letting us have a draft of their chapters in this volume. 1 Called so because he was the copying scribe of the unique copy of the pseudo-Chaucer 'Tale of Beryn' in the collection of the 'Canterbury Tales' in Alnwick Castle MS 455.

The principal aim is to determine the provenance of the text’s scribal language. SJC was made by a professional scribe, also responsible for copying other popular contemporary works. These include manuscripts of the prose Brut Chronicle, some of the stories of the Canterbury Tales and the unique Tale of Beryn in Alnwick Castle, Duke of Northumberland, 455, the source of the designation of this scribe as the ‘Beryn Scribe’. In LALME, only the language of the last-mentioned of this scribe’s productions was analysed, and localised to South Essex. It has been assumed that the Essex localisation of Alnwick Castle 455 is valid for all this scribe’s texts, including SJC, and that he was a ‘consistent translator’ into his own scribal dialect. Nevertheless, the language of SJC shows features whose distributions are not characteristic of Essex. The original Prick of Conscience was c...

THE DISSEMINATION OF MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE

Time perception is subjective, and it depends on various factors. Along the life of an individual it varies significantly. Time flowing, being unknown for a child, becomes the well-known mortal weapon for an old one. The old one, even though he may perceived time as ‘suspended in the air’, moves paradoxically between the desire of suspending time, of stopping death, and the ‘indolence’ produced by time suspended. In the cinematographic production of Malory’s La Mort d’Artur carried out in 1981 by J. Boorman with his film Excalibur, time is suspended for several central characters of the Arthurian legend. In

The Latin version of this treatise was a requirement in the medical curriculum at medieval European universities. The purpose of this paper is to establish the provenance or distribution of the language in eight of the extant copies in order to arrive at a conclusion about the diffusion of this work. Analysed are the dialectal furins and features of the copies found in Clainbridge, Corpus Christi College 424, London, British Library Harley 2374, Glasgow, Uinversity Library Ferguson 147, Oxford, Bodleian Library Aslimole 1438, Cainbridge, Magdalene College Pepys 1307. Cainbridge, St. Jolin's College 37 and Glasgow, University Library Hunter 117. With this analysis I intend to determine the filial relationship ainong the different versions, and to locate each copy within a specific dialect aren.
