RESUMO A expansão do setor terciário, conhecida por terciarização, mostrou-se um processo de múltiplas tendências e que produz composições setoriais distintas entre desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento. Diante da expansão e magnitude dos serviços é de suma importância conhecer os fatores que operam nesta direção, e compreender os impactos deste movimento para o desenvolvimento da economia brasileira. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo traçar um diagnóstico do processo de terciarização no Brasil com foco nas mudanças na demanda final, intermediária e nos diferenciais de produtividade. Os resultados foram comparados a economias escolhidas como referência-Estados Unidos e Reino Unido, a fim de identificar possibilidades de desenvolvimento para o terciário brasileiro. Para tanto, foram utilizados os dados das matrizes insumos-produto e realizadas as seguintes aplicações: multiplicadores de produção e emprego; índices de ligações para frente e para trás e identificação dos setores-chave; campo de influência; análise de decomposição estrutural e produtividade total dos fatores. Destacam-se os seguintes resultados: i) o crescimento dos serviços é motivado por diversos fatores, sendo o aumento da demanda final, em especial o consumo das famílias, o principal responsável pela ampliação da produção do setor; ii) em termos gerais, o setor de serviços no Brasil possui menor grau de integração com o restante da economia, e apresenta menor crescimento da produtividade do trabalho em relação às economias de referência; e iii) o uso dos dados a preços correntes superestima a produtividade do setor de serviços em decorrência da "doença dos custos".

Health expenditures are thus uneven across the country and cannot contribute equally to health outcomes across disease categories. This study aims to identify how the health expenditures of municipalities affect the mortality rate in the state of Paraná by causa mortis. We considered years of life lost for each municipality, the chapters of the International Classification of Diseases (10th revision), and the elasticity of this measure in relation to public health expenditure. Considering the possibility of endogeneity, this study follows the instrumental variable approach in a panel of generalized method of moments - instrumental variable (GMM-IV) with fixed effects. Our results show that a 1% increase in health expenditure could decrease the average number of years lost specifically for some causes from 0.176% to 1.56% at the municipal level. A participação feminina na oferta de trabalho é mais instável que a masculina. As mulheres são ma... more A participação feminina na oferta de trabalho é mais instável que a masculina. As mulheres são mais afetadas em períodos de crise, pela maternidade, discriminação e têm menores chances de encontrar um emprego no setor formal. No presente trabalho foram utilizados os microdados da PNAD entre 2001 a 2015, em um modelo probit, para verificar como características individuais afetam a inserção no mercado de trabalho e como esses efeitos alteram-se ao longo do período analisado. Os resultados mostram que “ser mulher” reduz significativamente a participação da mulher no mercado de trabalho para todo o período analisado, e que essa redução é ainda maior para mulheres com filhos ou chefes de domicílio.

Utiliza-se um modelo dinâmico e interregional de Equilíbrio Geral Computável, calibrado para 28 regiões e 51 setores. Em termos metodológicos, a inovação deste trabalho consiste em desagregar Sergipe em duas regiões no modelo: Região Metropolitana de Aracaju (RMA) e Resto de Sergipe (RSE). Os resultados apontam para um relevante impacto na RMA, com baixo vazamento para o RSE e as outras unidades federativas. Os setores com maior impacto na RMA estariam relacionados à dinâmica de construção e operação de um investimento estruturante, considerando a demanda por insumos e serviços nestas fases, a exemplo dos Serviços de manutenção e reparação, Serviços prestados às empresas, Cimento, entre outros. Estima-se que o PIB real da RMA cresceria acima do PIB do cenário de referência em uma magnitude de 6,55% até 2030. This article aims to estimate the economic impacts of expenditure on tourism in the Brazilian Nor... more This article aims to estimate the economic impacts of expenditure on tourism in the Brazilian Northeast and its effects on the states' productive structure and regional inequalities. We use an interregional input-output matrix for the nine northeastern states and the rest of Brazil. The main results show that tourist expenditure in the Northeast was responsible for a 3.9% increase in the Northeast's gross domestic product (GDP). Additionally, the sectorial analysis indicated significant spillover effects to the rest of Brazil, especially from manufacturing industries. On the other hand, tourist spending contributed to reducing regional inequalities.
Woman's participation in Brazilian labor market has increased remarkably in the last decades. Mor... more Woman's participation in Brazilian labor market has increased remarkably in the last decades. Moreover, those who found jobs are the most qualified ones. Despite these changes, unemployment rates are still higher, the wages are lower, and the employment is highly concentrated in some sectors. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the importance of woman's work, and its growth, for the Brazilian economy in recent years. We use a Dynamic General Equilibrium Model for Brazil, which follows the Australian modelling approach, with two main developments. First, we disaggregate the labor factor by gender and qualification. Secondly, we split the household income into four types: labor; capital; government transfers and other sources. Two simulations were carried out, historical and decomposition, both for the period 2006-2013. Results showed that when analyzing the GDP composition, labor loses contribution. However, at the same time, woman's contribution to total labor increased from 34.71% to 42.38%. This increase reflects not only the increase in women's employment, but especially reveals its increasing contribution to the national income. The decomposition simulation demonstrates that 31.17% of the average growth of GDP in the period was explained by changes in labor usage, being 28.37% due to the increased use of high-skilled woman. Regardless the positive overall effect on the economy, for several sectors changes in labor composition produced negative effects on production growth in the period. In general, the positive impacts were concentrated in the sectors related to domestic demand, in which women's work with high qualification gained importance, such as clothing items and accessories, leather goods and footwear, perfumery, hygiene and cleaning and most service sectors. On the other side, the negative effects were concentrated in manufacturing sectors linked to exports and the services related to them.

Este estudo estima o impacto econômico de restrições na oferta de água utilizando um modelo de equilíbrio geral computável interregional para os municípios da RMBH. Busca-se compreender a importância da água como insumo produtivo e no consumo das famílias, e como a limitação de seu uso afeta as decisões econômicas dos setores e das famílias. Os resultados indicam que para um corte de 1% no consumo total de água na RMBH seria necessária uma elevação média de tarifas de 7,3%. O efeito total sobre o uso de água mostra-se bastante inelástico, uma vez que a redução de consumo é 1/7 da elevação dos preços.
This paper reconsiders the Brazilian wage curve using individual data from the National Household... more This paper reconsiders the Brazilian wage curve using individual data from the National Household Survey at 27 Federative Units over the period 2002-2009. We find evidence in favor of the Brazilian wage curve with an unemployment elasticity of-0.08 when the lagged unemployment rate is used as an instrument for current unemployment rate. We also find that males in Brazil are significantly more responsive to local unemployment rates (-0.13) than their female counterparts. In fact, we find that the unemployment elasticity for women is statistically insignificant. Applying gender specific unemployment rates, the elasticity for men decreases to-0.09, while the elasticity for women remains statistically insignificant. This paper also finds that the estimates for Brazilian wage curve are completely different for the case of formal and informal workers.
This paper analyses sustainable consumption in Brazil, highlighting the consumption profile of su... more This paper analyses sustainable consumption in Brazil, highlighting the consumption profile of sustainable products by income level and household composition. Preference data collected in 2012 by the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, and expenditure data from the 2008-2009 Brazilian Household Budget Survey were used in a Computable General Equilibrium model to project scenarios of demand for sustainable products and its implication for production, employment, and household income. Household income growth, economic growth, population dynamics, productivity, and energy efficiency gains were explicitly modelled. A dynamic path for consumption preferences towards organic products was also included. Our simulation assumes that preference for organic consumption increases from 2016 to 2050, varying among income deciles. By 2050, Brazil would experience an overall increase in organic consumption, despite differences between poor and rich households regarding preference and share of income spent in organic products. This result is the consequence of the combined effect of income growth (faster for poorer households) and preference change (faster for richer households). The projected consumption path suggests that increase in organic consumption may generate positive effects for all households, including the poor, by increasing production, employment demand in sectors were the poor are more likely to be employed, and family income.
A substantial increase of the world demand of commodities is expected between 2015 and 2025, acco... more A substantial increase of the world demand of commodities is expected between 2015 and 2025, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2016) projections. It was estimated that Brazilian soybean exports would increase by 32% and the beef exports would grow 40%. Historically, those activities are considered important drivers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. Then, to meet these expansion, the region could depend on expanding its agriculture frontier. In order to study the consequences of these scenario over land use change and consequently over deforestation, we use an interregional dynamic computable general equilibrium model (CGE) for 30 regions in the Amazon and the rest of Brazil. In general, the results suggest that the aggregate deforestation would increase over time, which means an additional decrease in natural forest area, projected to be 1,610 km 2 relative to the baseline. However, the additional deforestation is not very large in most of the regions, only marginally impacting annual rates. Nevertheless, soybean would have a stronger effect on both the economy and land use of Amazon and that its growth could lead to a shift of cattle towards other forest areas.

This study projects the economic impacts of COVID‐19 outbreak on the Brazilian economy using a dy... more This study projects the economic impacts of COVID‐19 outbreak on the Brazilian economy using a dynamic interregional computable general equilibrium model. We considered two scenarios. The first scenario has two channels of transmission over the economic system: a negative shock of labour supply due to the rates of morbidity and mortality caused by the pandemic, and a temporary shutdown of nonessential economic activities. The second scenario adds to the first the effects of the government fiscal package adopted to counteract the effects of COVID‐19 on the economy. Furthermore, in both scenarios, a sensitive analysis related to the temporality of the shutdown is considered by assuming 3 and 6 months of shutdown. The results indicate a reduction of 3.78% in the national GDP growth rate in Scenario 1 and a reduction of 0.48% in Scenario 2, in 2020, with 3 months of shutdown. With 6 months, the reduction would be greater, 10.90% and 7.64% in Scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. Thus, the government fiscal stimulus considered in this study partially mitigates the reduction in GDP projected under the COVID‐19 outbreak. The study also presents sectoral projections at the national and state levels. The estimates indicate reductions in the GDP of most of Brazilian states in both scenarios.

This paper reconsiders the Brazilian wage curve using individual data from the National Household... more This paper reconsiders the Brazilian wage curve using individual data from the National Household Survey at 27 Federative Units over the period 2002-2009. We find evidence in favor of the Brazilian wage curve with an unemployment elasticity of-0.08 when the lagged unemployment rate is used as an instrument for current unemployment rate. We also find that males in Brazil are significantly more responsive to local unemployment rates (-0.13) than their female counterparts. In fact, we find that the unemployment elasticity for women is statistically insignificant. Applying gender specific unemployment rates, the elasticity for men decreases to-0.09, while the elasticity for women remains statistically insignificant. This paper also finds that the estimates for Brazilian wage curve are completely different for the case of formal and informal workers.
This paper analyses sustainable consumption in Brazil, highlighting the consumption profile of su... more This paper analyses sustainable consumption in Brazil, highlighting the consumption profile of sustainable products by income level and household composition. Preference data collected in 2012 by the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, and expenditure data from the 2008-2009 Brazilian Household Budget Survey were used in a Computable General Equilibrium model to project scenarios of demand for sustainable products and its implication for production, employment, and household income. Household income growth, economic growth, population dynamics, productivity, and energy efficiency gains were explicitly modelled. A dynamic path for consumption preferences towards organic products was also included. Our simulation assumes that preference for organic consumption increases from 2016 to 2050, varying among income deciles. By 2050, Brazil would experience an overall increase in organic consumption, despite differences between poor and rich households regarding preference and share of income spent in organic products. This result is the consequence of the combined effect of income growth (faster for poorer households) and preference change (faster for richer households). The projected consumption path suggests that increase in organic consumption may generate positive effects for all households, including the poor, by increasing production, employment demand in sectors were the poor are more likely to be employed, and family income.
A substantial increase of the world demand of commodities is expected between 2015 and 2025, acco... more A substantial increase of the world demand of commodities is expected between 2015 and 2025, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2016) projections. It was estimated that Brazilian soybean exports would increase by 32% and the beef exports would grow 40%. Historically, those activities are considered important drivers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. Then, to meet these expansion, the region could depend on expanding its agriculture frontier. In order to study the consequences of these scenario over land use change and consequently over deforestation, we use an interregional dynamic computable general equilibrium model (CGE) for 30 regions in the Amazon and the rest of Brazil. In general, the results suggest that the aggregate deforestation would increase over time, which means an additional decrease in natural forest area, projected to be 1,610 km 2 relative to the baseline. However, the additional deforestation is not very large in most of the regions, only marginally impacting annual rates. Nevertheless, soybean would have a stronger effect on both the economy and land use of Amazon and that its growth could lead to a shift of cattle towards other forest areas.

Não diferente está a situação da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (RMBH) que presenciou a mais severa escassez hídrica de sua história em 2015. Este estudo estima o impacto econômico de restrições na oferta de água utilizando um modelo de equilíbrio geral computável interregional para os municípios da RMBH. Busca-se compreender a importância da água como insumo produtivo e no consumo das famílias, e como a limitação de seu uso afeta as decisões econômicas dos setores e das famílias. Os resultados indicam que para um corte de 1% no consumo total de água na RMBH seria necessária uma elevação média de tarifas de 7,3%. O efeito total sobre o uso de água mostra-se bastante inelástico, uma vez que a redução de consumo é 1/7 da elevação dos preços.

This study projects the economic impacts of COVID‐19 outbreak on the Brazilian economy using a dy... more This study projects the economic impacts of COVID‐19 outbreak on the Brazilian economy using a dynamic interregional computable general equilibrium model. We considered two scenarios. The first scenario has two channels of transmission over the economic system: a negative shock of labour supply due to the rates of morbidity and mortality caused by the pandemic, and a temporary shutdown of nonessential economic activities. The second scenario adds to the first the effects of the government fiscal package adopted to counteract the effects of COVID‐19 on the economy. Furthermore, in both scenarios, a sensitive analysis related to the temporality of the shutdown is considered by assuming 3 and 6 months of shutdown. The results indicate a reduction of 3.78% in the national GDP growth rate in Scenario 1 and a reduction of 0.48% in Scenario 2, in 2020, with 3 months of shutdown. With 6 months, the reduction would be greater, 10.90% and 7.64% in Scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. Thus, the government fiscal stimulus considered in this study partially mitigates the reduction in GDP projected under the COVID‐19 outbreak. The study also presents sectoral projections at the national and state levels. The estimates indicate reductions in the GDP of most of Brazilian states in both scenarios.
