Methods: a quasi-experimental study was conducted with 91 women. Through the application of educational intervention, women were divided into four groups of health education. The educational material used was an informative folder on the early detection of breast cancer, associated to the brief motivational interview technique. Results: the educational intervention associated to the brief motivational interview promoted an increase in the adequacy of knowledge (p=0.001) and attitude (p=0.007). Conclusion: the educational intervention was able to increase the percentage of adequacy of the knowledge and the attitude of women in relation to the early detection of breast cancer.

As mulheres apresentavam maior vulnerabilidade no estado civil (p<0,001) e no sta...

Here we present data on the development of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based methods for the detection of antibodies against recombinant leishmanial antigens (namely, the recombinant K26 [rK26] and rK39 antigens from Leishmania infantum and the rA2 protein from Leishmania donovani ) in comparison to ELISAs employing crude soluble antigen (CSA). The assays utilized sera from known negative controls ( n = 25) and clinically asymptomatic ( n = 50) and symptomatic ( n = 50) dogs with confirmed L. infantum infections. Additional studies were also done using sera from animals harboring other infections ( n = 14) for the evaluation of cross-reactivity. Our study indicated that rK26 and rK39 used in ELISAs provided very high sensitivities for the dete...

The present work is focused on three different models of oxidative stress: the xanthine/ xanthine oxidase system (XXO), an extracellular superoxide anion generator; tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), an analogue of lipid hydroperoxides; and doxorubicin (Dox), an anticancer drug. Superoxide and peroxyl radicals, among other ROS, could be effectively scavenged by MnTM-4-PyP, a polyfunctional catalytic antioxidant. In this report, we have addressed the role of MnTM-4-PyP on the protection against the cytotoxicity induced by the three aforementioned oxidants. The effect of MnTM-4-PyP (0.1-100 μM) was evaluated in V79 fibroblasts using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide reduction and the crystal violet assays, as well as the mitotic index. Also, the generation of intracellular ROS was studied by the fluorescent probe dihydroethidium. MnTM-4-PyP has shown significant protective effects against the cytotoxicity of XXO and TBHP, increasing the cell viability in approximately 40% and reducing the intracellular level of ROS. However, no considerable protection occurred against Dox. The three oxidants caused a mitotic index reduction that was not altered by MnTM-4-PyP. In summary, MnTM-4-PyP appears to be a promising agent for the protection against oxidative injury. However, it has shown differential responses, reinforcing the need to study different experimental models for the adequate evaluation of its potentialities as a catalytic antioxidant.

Data consisted of observations of how teachers stimulate problem solving relating to content-matter studied in classroom. Research was conducted in two public schools in Fortaleza. Researchers adopted a methodology in development to stimulate teachers in the use of LO. After implementation, observations were conducted during classes conducted at the computer lab while students used LO. Results indicated that teachers need to improve their practices by using these resources in a more systemic way.

Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a well recognized independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and thromboembolism. Increased homocysteine levels may occur due to a number of factors including inherited gene polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T. Here, we evaluate plas- ma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels and frequency of the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism in asymptomatic healthy volunteers and type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension but without nephropathy. We have also investigated the relationship between tHcy levels and the presence of MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism. Plasma tHcy levels and MTHFR C677T genotype were investigated in a total of 53 subjects. These included asymptomatic healthy volunteers (n = 16), patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 7), subjects with hypertension (n = 12) and patients with both type 2 diabetes and hypertension (n = 18). Renal function, serum lipids and other metabolites were also assessed. There was no significant difference in tHcy levels between the groups studied. The frequency of MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism observed was similar to that obtained for the general Brazilian population. In patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension but without impaired renal function, we observed no meaningful correlation between increased tHcy levels and the presence of MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism. Type 2 diabetics who are homozygous or heterozygous for the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism showed normal tHcy levels. Our results further suggest that diabetes without an associated adverse risk profile is not an independent correlate of increased tHcy levels.
