Аннотация: Проанализировано употребление использовавшихся для указания на российско-шведскую гран... more Аннотация: Проанализировано употребление использовавшихся для указания на российско-шведскую границу 1617 г. шведских слов gräns и rå: во-первых, в тексте Столбовского договора; во-вторых, в описании границы, составленном шведскими комиссарами в 1621 г.; в-третьих, в протоколах сессий местных судов на территории Кексгольмского лена. Показано, что слово rå в XVII в. часто обозначало сам пограничный знак, тогда как gräns имело более абстрактное значение и указывало либо на (линейную) границу между двумя государствами в относительно абстрактном смысле (прежде всего в официальных документах), либо на пограничную территорию (в сохранившихся судебных протоколах). В практическом смысле, однако, эта границаgräns была вполне проницаема.

Traditionally, this has been seen as marking the Swedish army”s victories in the Swedish-Russian war, as challenging the power and rule of Grand Duke of Muscovy Ivan IV or explained in the context of early modern state formation. This article seeks to understand the logic of taking the title of grand duke as a continuum of medieval patterns of thought about princely power and rule. Ruling lands, vassals, and people were still very much connected with the ruler’s person and princely and dynastic powers understood in the medieval way. Princely titles played a crucial role in this game of – sometimes even overlapping – powers.

This paper empirically analyses how a public institution chooses the cofinanci in funding competi... more This paper empirically analyses how a public institution chooses the cofinanci in funding competitive agricultural R&D research projects. The public funding institution observes some objective features of the selected research projects and of the proponents. The paper puts forward some testable hypotheses about how the funding institution uses this available information to decide the cofinancing rate. An empirical model is then specified and estimated to test these hypotheses. The empirical application refers to the real case of the agricultural R&D program funded by an Italian region (Emilia the cofinancing rate actually responds to the observed features but this response is not always consistent with the formulated hypotheses

The general view of urban segregation in pre-modern towns has been that the wealthy lived near th... more The general view of urban segregation in pre-modern towns has been that the wealthy lived near the administrative and economic center(s), while the poor were pushed to the limits of the town. This approach has been questioned by studies proving that urban spaces were socially mixed. This dilemma has been studied here by examining in detail the urban segregation in one small town, Sortavala, at the eastern borderland of the Swedish realm. The analysis shows that the town space was bipolarly segregated. The “gentry,” officeholders and the like, lived near the market square and town hall; the wealthy burghers along the main street. However, even the poorest taxpayers lived among the wealthy and those of high social rank. The segregation was relative: the proportion of the wealthy grew in the grid plan in the town center; the settlements growing “freely” outside the original grid plan were for the poor only.
