Longo Sofista, piacere, eros, elemento bucolico, romanzo antico. abStract. Longus' novel successfully combines the tropes of bucolic with those of heterosexual erotic prose narrative. This paper investigates the impact of this hybridity on the treatment of a prominent and persistent element in the text, the concept and associations of pleasure. It is argued that bucolic pleasure and erotic pleasure can be distinguished, and that erotic pleasure has greater diegetic potential since it frequently entails movement and change. The contrast between the more static bucolic pleasure and its more mobile counterpart contributes to the frustration experienced by the potential lovers, Daphnis and Chloe, which is so important to the story. The conclusion of the novel can be seen to offer a reconciliation of the two types of pleasure, through the satisfaction located in sexual enjoyment combined with indulgence in an artful bucolic lifestyle.

Part I: Critical Text with Commentary' by Dirk Obbink is discussed. The book, especially commentary on the first part of the work On Piety from the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneura is something of a landmark in Philodemus and Epicurean studies is commendable, not only for the sheer labor and diligence that have obviously gone into this work but also for producing a superbly accurate and accessible edition of an extremely difficult text.

Obbink is to be commended not only for the sheer labour and diligence that have obviously gone into this work but also for producing a superbly accurate and accessible edition of an extremely difficult text. The edition will become an essential tool for scholars of Epicureanism and Hellenistic philosophy and will undoubtedly also be of interest to students of papyrology, philology, ancient religion, Cicero and the intellectual climate of the first century BC.

Hershkowitz's study has revealed that even the little there is should be carefully distinguished from madness as conceived in later Roman epic. And yet, an examination of madness in the Iliad and Odyssey, since they constitute perhaps our earliest texts, is an essential precursor to any synthetic treatment of the topic in later Greek literature. This paper will attempt a limited investigation into madness in these two poems by focusing on just one linguistic term, the verb mainomai and its derivatives. What I shall suggest is that careful scrutiny of the contexts in which this verb is employed, encourages a need to reconsider our standard assumptions as to the semasiology of this verb. While I am in broad agreement with Hershkowitz's point of view on this subject, my own conclusions differ from hers in some respects.

These views are broadly consistent with the School’s recommendation that the wise minimize engagement in most aspects of civic life. Yet Epicurus himself, and later exponents of his philosophy, clearly utilize techniques and figures derived from rhetorical theory and practice, and Lucretius even chose to communicate Epicurean doctrine through rhetorically enhanced poetry. Since the later Epicurean Philodemus represents the fullest and most detailed source of Epicurean reflection on the subject of rhetoric, particular attention is given to his testimony in On Rhetoric and to the question of how his testimony can be reconciled with the broader doxography on Epicurean attitudes to rhetoric. Philodemus maintains that Epicurus and the Founders of the School recognized one type of rhetoric, epideictic or “sophistic” as Philodemus labels it, as technical and useful. The ...
