A critique of relativity and localization

A new philosophical model makes particles and information at single points derivative. Space-time... more A new philosophical model makes particles and information at single points derivative. Space-time grids are not events but only ideal comparisons made by observers. Therefore the identity of space-time points and also of single particles is inherently a speculative assumption. The conservation of units can be derived and is not a foundation for events. An interaction is an actual change and can determine changed particles and a changed space-time grid from itself, both forward and backward in time. In contrast, relativity theory still retains the classical unit model in which information is localized at single points, merely positing more than one observer. One implication of the new model is that quantum mechanical solutions need not be limited by the requirements of relativity as is currently done. The model correctly predicts where difficulties should be found, and relates and explains many puzzles which are otherwise separated and inexplicable.

Viewing a six-minute episode from a 'Problem-based Learning' (PBL) session recorded on videotape ... more Viewing a six-minute episode from a 'Problem-based Learning' (PBL) session recorded on videotape (see Introduction and Appendices to this special issue), I seem to see and hear several medical students and their 'coach' talking, gesturing, looking at and pointing to a complex chart, reading aloud from texts and notes, and generally making meaning by acting in and interacting with one another and the materials around them. I want to briefly analyze a few aspects of their talk and action in order to focus on how and why verbal and visual resources are integrated in this activity and how and why various kinds of evaluative meanings are getting made. The analysis is motivated in part by a concern for the materiality of the meaning-making process itself and its implications for the kinds of meanings we make and how we make them. I begin with some reflections on the surprising realism of the video medium, in which the data analyzed here have been recorded, propose an extended semiotic model for multimedia analysis, and present some highlights from my analysis of the PBL episode.

This paper argues that Critical Discourse Analysis needs to extend its work to new communications... more This paper argues that Critical Discourse Analysis needs to extend its work to new communications media. I identify the phenomenon of the distributed transmedia franchise as a new kind of inter-medium with significant ideological potential. Some components of transmedia franchises such as immersive worlds and identification through online communities, as well as its ability to continue to present itself to us across many guises, sites, and extended periods of time, may make it a more powerful medium for shaping people's views of what is natural in the social world than prior media. Finally, I propose a specific analytic model and strategies to enable us to assess the affordances, effects, and dangers of this new inter-medium and its messages.

An old saying has it that it takes a village to raise a child. As children, we know how much we n... more An old saying has it that it takes a village to raise a child. As children, we know how much we need to learn about everything and everyone in our communities to live there successfully. As we learn, we gradually become our villages: we internalize the diversity of viewpoints that collectively make sense of all that goes on in the community. At the same time, we develop values and identities: in small tasks and large projects, we discover the ways we like to work, the people we want to be, the accomplishments that make us proud. In all these activities we constantly need to make sense of the ideas and values of others, to integrate differing viewpoints and desires, different ways of talking and doing. As we participate in community life, we inevitably become in part the people that others need us to be, and many of us also find at least some of our efforts unsupported or even strenuously opposed by others.

The notion of a linguistic "register" is useful in posing questions about how the ways language i... more The notion of a linguistic "register" is useful in posing questions about how the ways language is used differ from one kind of human activity to another. This paper analyzes a videotaped segment of male grade 4/5 students (n=3) who are talking as they work to build a tower from plastic drinking straws and pins. Discussion of the analysis includes: language in group activity, 'hematic and social interaction, non-verbal dimension, and problem solving: semiotics and situated cognition. Appendices include an analytical transcript and actual transcript. Contains 28 references. (MKR)

Literacy and Diversity

If true literacy is the ability to use written language for your own purposes, then the forms of ... more If true literacy is the ability to use written language for your own purposes, then the forms of literacy should be as diverse as are the interests and purposes of people in our society. The diversity of written language should express not just social differences, but the real social conflicts among interests, values, and points of view. In a democratic and truly literate society, the uses and forms of written language should reflect and help to create the same healthy social diversity which the spoken language does. Otherwise, an astute observer might be pardoned for supposing that the forms and uses of literacy were being limited and restricted in the interests of some members of the community, while others were allowed access to literacy only if they accepted those limitations and restrictions.
