essentially not all positive externalities of our biotic environment are being represented as opp... more essentially not all positive externalities of our biotic environment are being represented as opportunity costs as they should where we seem to not yet be fully aware of all the positive benefits our collective biodiverse environment offers. An example of this is our recent knowledge of the importance of botanical produced chemicals called phytoncides that arecommunity gardens and other green spaces in our cities. Their positive societal impact is only now becoming far more clear as multiple recent studies indicate that areas with greater amounts of greenspace have been shown to reduce incidents of crime including (Coniff, 2012) (Simpson-Johnson) (Kathryn Gilstad-Hayden, 2015). Other specific attributes that have not been factored into much of our appraisal of these ecosystem services are phytoncides that trees have been shown to produce. These chemicals are slowly being shown to be a vital asset in societal health management including reduction of inflammation in populations (Q. LI, 2009). If we were to factor in ecosystem produced chemicals as a component of the cost benefit analysis there is evidence that our florascape would have an additional benefit that we were not fully aware of previously. This precedence should indicate to us that our environment may hold other potential positive benefits that we are unaware with much to explore. Another of these is biodiversity which has been labeled a free resource as long as the ecosystem in not compromised which current technology has so far been unable to replicate (Stanford, 2012). But if this biodiversity is actually benefiting us and it's loss is deleterious then cost benefit analysis should put a monetary value on biodiversity to find opportunity costs of biodiversity restoration. Biodiversity may also play a key role in ecosystem resilience (Tom Oliver, 2015) where research is beginning to show that benefits of biodiversity for ecosystem services is vital and that in order for ecosystems to remain productive biodiversity need be sustained.
