Interpreting Real Video Art For New Music Composition

The foundations of this research project arise from the process of music composition for real vid... more The foundations of this research project arise from the process of music composition for real video art. The development of new musical compositions for real video art are fixed media works in which approaches to composition were accessed, explored, and developed in creation of musically informed audio-visual expression. This thesis explores the interpretive relationships between visual based media, specifically, real video art and the physical effects embedded within. This process has no codified structures or laws and results in relationships that are distinctive to the individual artwork. This research obtains participant-based commentary on two new visual works that has informed new structuralist approaches to musical composition for real video art. These mixed media works are provided as templates for the composer to interpret and support the development of their hypothetical compositions when engaging with the written questionnaire. The participants used their own experience and language in assessing how best they associate sounds with the imagery. This practice-as-research project combines phenomenological qualitive methodology with academic research, and musical composition. Chapter One defines this research project. Chapter Two looks at the contextual framework which has supported the development and rationalisation of this investigation. Chapter Three focuses on the methodology of this investigation, concerning the use of participant-based qualitive questionnaires to obtain interpretive dialogical data used to inform the approaches to new music compositional approaches. Chapter Five critiques the participant responses and summarises the findings which demonstrate the insights found through interpretive and practical analysis. The compositional methods suggested by participants are arranged and applied to the development of new music compositions, supporting the case for a generation of new compositional methods and disseminated as new audio-visual works. These methods are sought to measure trends and regularities in the participants interpretations of the physical effects in real video art. The application of these methodological approaches allowed this research project to be assessed from various approaches to interpretation, primarily challenging structuralist approaches to interpretation, drawing together practice-based materials and qualitative research findings. Within the development of composition, the composer must decide on the musical approaches when interpreting the physical effects embedded in the real video art examples provided by the research practitioner. A participant-based questionnaire has informed the research of new methods and approaches of compositions developed from interpretive language, focusing on the semantics of intra- and extra-musical language to help the development of new music composition approaches
