In the context of post-colonial literatures in English, the novel "Wide Sargasso Sea" (... more In the context of post-colonial literatures in English, the novel "Wide Sargasso Sea" (1966) by the Dominican Jean Rhys (1890-1979) depicts the struggle of the oppressed to make their voices heard. In her masterpiece, Rhys dramatizes a central issue: that the ethics that direct politics of state can be observed to prevail at the level of the personal life of the individual. Imperial policies prevalent in the colonial West Indies find a correlate in the patriarchal assumptions that underlie the behaviour of the characters in their private lives. With the purpose of explaining by which means the narrative under scrutiny achieves this particular aim, the present work concentrates on a detailed linguistic and technical analysis of Part II of the novel where the power struggle has its development and resolution.

A comparison will be held between the concepts of modernism and those expounded by McLuhan in terms of the Guttemberg Galaxy or the world of literacy. Similarly, the postmodern mentality will be equated to McLuhan's Constellation of Marconi or the environment of modern man. These theoretical framework explained, the article proceeds to the interpretation of the novel "White Noise" by the contem- porary American writer Don Delillo

However, he is also universally recognized as the initiator of what would later become a very popular genre, detective fiction. The fact that the latter stands on very different philosophical assumptions as those that sustain the romantic world-view marks Poe’s production as fundamentally contradictory. The riddle of Poe’s literary production has excited the interest of critics who attempt to classify his work.
My purpose is to sustain that Poe’s dual position entitles him to the recognition of universality and can explain his appeal to international audiences still today. For this purpose I will refer to the fundamental character of this ambiguity as well as to its validity for contemporary thought sustaining my argument with theories evolved in the fields of Linguistics (Saussure 1915), Stylistics (Jakobson 1956-1960) and Philosophy (Taylor 1985).

The novel is original, not only in the choice of verse as a form but also in the skilful juxtaposition of multicultural, post-imperial 21st century Britain and 3rd century Londinium. The novelist is successful in making verse an appropriate medium to deal with issues of current validity while simultaneously making the ancient past vividly and pleasantly alive to contemporary eyes.

The first part of the paper is devoted to the definition of this concept as a subversive political strategy arising in the context of the power struggle originated by Western-European imperial policies and later becoming an inclusive ideological instrument to deconstruct modern views in philosophy, sociology and art. The second part of the paper focuses on the application of the concept to fiction and art with special reference to the novel White Noise by Don Delillo and to some of the buildings designed by the architects Frank Gerhy and Michael Graves.
