Within this account, Bowen interrogates the connection between narrative and identity. The relationship of character to setting, and the relationship of character to others, are mediated by the force of time. Because of the problematic nature of Anglo-Irish identity, Bowen drew inspiration from surrealism and warped the experience of time in her fiction in order to disrupt ontological stability in the narrative.
