Geoffrey Roberts
Professor Geoffrey Roberts is a recognised world authority on Stalin, the Second World War, and the history of Soviet military and foreign policy. He has published more than 30 books and some 100 scholarly articles and book reviews. His work has been translated into 18 languages: Chinese, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.
His latest book is Stalin's Library: A Dictator and His Books (Yale University Press 2022) which has been reviewed by The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Telegraph, The Spectator, The Guardian, The Dublin Review of Books, The Tablet, The Tablet and many other publications.
He is a reviewer and op-ed writer for The Irish Examiner and The Irish Times and is a regular contributor to Irish, British and Russian radio and TV programmes.
Professor Roberts’ academic achievements have been recognised through many prizes and awards: Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (1997); UCC President’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2003); Fulbright Scholar, Harvard University (2005); Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellow (2004-2005); Senior Research Fellow, Nobel Peace Institute, Oslo (2008); IRCHSS Distinguished Fellow (2010); Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Advanced Studies, Budapest (2015); Senior Research Fellow, Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (2018-2019), Senior Research Fellow, Polish Institute of Advanced Studies (2022) and three UCC Research Achievement Awards, including a life-time award in 2012.
In 2013 the US-based Society for Military History honoured his biography Stalin’s General: The Life of Georgy Zhukov (Random House 2012) with its Distinguished Book Award. In March 2016 he was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy - Ireland's highest academic honour.
Within the scholarly community Professor Roberts regularly shares his research at local, national and international events. He is a regular speaker at conferences in Russia as well as Britain, Ireland, Europe and the United States.
Professor Roberts’ broader research interests include peace movement history, Irish history, the philosophy of history, and International Relations. He has a particular interest in narrative and in 2001 Routledge published his The History and Narrative Reader.
As Director of UCC’s ‘Volunteers Project’ he has played an important role in initiating and supporting research on the experiences of Irish volunteers who enlisted in the British armed forces during the Second World War.
Pofessor Roberts’ prolific publication output was combined with a strong commitment to teaching and academic service. He supervised some 100 MA/MPhil/PhD theses and served as an external examiner for Australian, British, Irish, and Russian universities.
He was Head of UCC’s School of History from 2009-2014 and served as Dean of Graduate Studies and Deputy Registrar in 2017-2018.
