This was ascertained by a cross sectional study through the administration of 891 copies of pretested SERVQUAL questionnaire at designated bus stops for campus shuttle bus service. The study revealed perceived poor quality bus service for UCC and UG but perceived good quality shuttle bus service for KNUST. In general, there was perceived poor quality bus service for all the attributes and dimensions when the three public universities were considered as a whole. Recommendations were proffered for better service delivery and perception.

This is possible given the low vehicular acquisition and low cost required to enjoy public transport services. Unfortunately, the discourse on the responsiveness of public transport services to the disability community in the Global South has been viewed from users' perspectives, leaving out key stakeholders whose actions impact persons with disability (PWDs') mobility needs. This study seeks to fill the gap by exploring stakeholders' responses to the travel needs of commuters with disability in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. Employing an exploratory research design, this study purposively engaged five national stakeholders on transport and disability issues. All interviews and transcripts were transcribed using MaxQDA. The qualitative data analysis was iterative as the study adopted a thematic analytical approach to explore pa...

Case Studies on Transport Policy

Previous gender mainstreaming efforts in this area have not always achieved their purpose, but even when successful, these initiatives are seldom up-scaled. This study explored the scalability potential of gender mainstreaming initiatives in Ghana using the second phase of the Transport Rehabilitation Programme (TRP-2) and the ongoing Cocoa Roads Rehabilitation project as case studies. The research found that Ghana’s gender policy landscape to be adequate but not necessarily optimal in operationalizing gender mainstreaming. This study emphasised the male dominance in the provision of rural transport infrastructure and services. Absence of gender issues in budgeting and a silence on gender issues in legislation and regulation points to weak gender responsiveness in the transport sector. A key observation is that gender mainstreaming components are more visible in donor funded programmes as compared to nationally funded programmes.

Emphasis on this has however focused on the modification and inclusion of disability accessories in the construction of new facilities as well as the enactment of disability inclined policies related to admission, residential status and others aspect of campus life. One key area that has not received much attention has been the nature of campus walking environment and how it promotes easy mobility among all students’ groups. To assess the nature of campus walking environment, the study employed the use of an accessibility auditing scheme and also engaged 30 visually impaired and one wheelchair user who were reached through snowballing. An in-depth interview guide was used as the primary data collection instrument...

Children in particular are faced with mobility constraints in their quest to access, education, health and recreation. This study investigated the ownership and use of bicycles among children in Rural Ghana. The study was conducted in six rural communities within two ecological zones (forest and coastal). Both qualitative and quantitative data collections were employed within the context of a cross-sectional study design. A sample size of 454 was chosen among children aged between 8 and 18. Individual and households were used as unit of analysis where appropriate. Results from this study revealed that 36.4% of the households owned bicycles whilst usage was significantly higher at 63.9%.

However, few studies have been conducted to assess the spread of diseases on road transport. This study sought to explore the views of operators and passengers about the spread of communicable diseases on the public road transport system in Accra, Ghana. Adapting the Disease Transmission Cycle as the conceptual framework, and following a qualitative research method, data for the study were collected through in-depth interviews and observations and were analysed manually based on the emerging themes. Though various diseases were identified to spread on the public road transport system, there were divergent views on the risk of being infected. Meanwhile, respondents indicated they would feel uncomfortable putting up with people suspected to be infected with communicable diseases. The study emphasises strict adherence to internationally acceptable s...

This was ascertained with the use of QUALBUS dimensions and how each influences student’s satisfaction. The purpose and reasons for using campus shuttle were also elucidated. The research methodology was a cross sectional survey at the two designated bus stops for the University of Cape Coast’s bus shuttling service at Old site (South campus) and Science (North campus) of 300 questionnaires through simple randomly sampling. The reliability of the study was tested by cronbach’s alfa. Frequency, percentage, correlation and regression were used for the data analysis. The results of the study indicate that 55% of the respondents were male; 70.2% were aged between 20-24years; 67.3% used the shuttle every other day; 50.5% used the campus shuttle because of the lower transport fares; 83.7% used the campus shuttle for educational reasons. Furthermore the results revealed tha...

The methodology was opinion survey of simple randomly selected 300 respondents at the two designated stations for the shuttle service. The cronbach'salpha of the attributes ranges from 0.903-0.907. Frequencies, percentage, mean andpaired sample t-testwas used for the data analysis. The results of the study indicates that 55% of the respondents are male; 70.2% are aged between 20-24years; 67.3% use the shuttle every other day; 50.5% use the campus shuttle because of the lower transport fares; 83.7% use the campus shuttle for educational reasons; all the five dimensions have negative gap scores and 17 attributes are statistically significant with p-value<0.005. The study makes recommendations for better service delivery.

This was achieved with the use of methodological triangulation approach not only involving qualitative and quantitative methodology but other sources of data collection such as questionnaire administration, in-depth interviews, and observations. The analysis began with the socio-economic and travel characteristics of respondents as to indicate which of these socio-economic and travel characteristics predominates in the study area. More so, the results of socio-economic, travel characteristics and reasons were cross tabulated with modal choice on the route. The significant relationship between respondents' socio-economic, travel characteristics and reasons with modal choice was ascertained by using Pearson's chi-square test.
The Intercity State Transport Company is one of the two state funded transport companies in Ghana... more The Intercity State Transport Company is one of the two state funded transport companies in Ghana competing with a range of other service providers mainly from the private sector in the industry. Once well respected and described as the pride of intercity travels in Ghana, it is currently a mere shadow of its former glory with rapid decline in passenger movements over the past years. This study sought to analyse passenger movements over the past five years and also explored challenges that have led to the steady decline of ISTC over the years. Secondary data was provided by the company and this was complemented with in-depth interviews with management. Findings of the study revealed that the service suffered a 60% decline in passenger movement between 2007 and 2011; however there was a high utilization of its services in January 2010 and December 2011. Finally, there was no statistically significant difference in the volume of passengers between 2010 and 2011.
