Kathryn Sampson
Professor Kathryn Sampson serves as faculty advisor to the School of Law's Board of Advocates programs, as faculty coach to several external competition teams, and as coordinator and administrator of practice-oriented courses that feature prominent Arkansas attorneys. She is a 1989 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law and earned her B.A. in English and journalism in 1982 from University of Northern Iowa.
Since 1993, she has coached the Arkansas team for the National Moot Court Competition sponsored by the Bar of the City of New York and, for several years the First Amendment Moot Court Competition sponsored by Vanderbilt University School of Law. She recently revived her coaching of the Jessup International Law Moot Court team which she had previously coached from 2000-2007. In her position as director of competitions, she is building on administrative experience working with the Ben J. Altheimer Moot Court Competition, working with student competition chairs to create original appellate records and administer the internal competition.
Since 1999, Professor Sampson has served on the University of Arkansas Distinguished Lectures Committee, and as the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lectures representative on that committee. In these capacities, she has been involved in planning campus visits from nationally and internationally known speakers, including Salman Rushdie, Ehud Barak, James Earl Jones, Robert Redford, Buzz Aldrin, Isabel Allende, W. S. Merwin, and Howard Zinn.
Before she assumed the role of Director of Competitions and Capstone Courses in the Spring of 2013, Professor Sampson taught, from 1993 to 2012, in Arkansas's Legal Research & Writing program, after teaching in a similar capacity at Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Ga., from 1990 to 1993. She has taught courses in legal research and writing, appellate practice, pretrial litigation documents, insurance law, and short courses in guardianship and insurance subrogation.
Professor Sampson has published several articles on topics ranging from insurance law, to will contest litigation, to ethics in legal research and writing. Her most recent writing has focused on nonprofit risk and nonprofit insurance, misrepresentation in insurance applications, and problems associated with the definition and punishment of plagiarism.
