I am a PhD student in Comparative, Political and Social History at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2019. I hold a master’s degree in Assessment and Management of Cultural Heritage (2019), issued by Universidad de Salamanca, and a bachelor’s in History (2017), issued by Universitat de València. My main field is antifascism in the Interwar period, the Spanish Civil War and the Italian Resistance with a special interest in the bolognesi volunteers of the Spanish conflict. I did internships in institutions as the Istituto Storico Parri E-R and the Museo della Resistenza di Bologna (2018) or the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica (2019).

In fact, a lot of historians around the world have studied and written about it throughout the years. But the word “exile” does not mark a single episode in history. Rather, it has happened over centuries, and each time the trigger for this forced migration has been a different event. The exile is thus subject to change. It signifies a different event each time because the causes, the reasons, the consequences, the people, the experience, and even the resulting pain are different each time. In the case of the expatriates of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), these people fled their home country in an attempt to avoid the repression of the new dictatorship and its leader, Francisco Franco. Within this migratory process, the French case has been most relevant and studied for the obvious reasons: most people fled Spain through the Pyrenees to France. But France is certainly not the only destination. There are studies about the Spanish exiled in other countries, such as the USSR, Mexico, or the United States.
