The 1989 strike at Eastern Airlines illustrates these different types of stakeholders. An analysis of the case underscores the importance of four generic strategies for managing different stakeholders. The case also demonstrates that executives should use an overarching strategy to change relationships with stakeholders from less favorable categories (e.g., nonsupportive) to more favorable ones (e.g., mixed blessing).

This study examines the stakeholder dynamics during the project front-end stage of two pioneering nuclear waste repository projects. To analyze changes in stakeholders’ importance and position on a project, we propose and apply a new conceptual framework: a stakeholder salience-position matrix. The study explicates how stakeholder dynamics are influenced by the interaction of stakeholders’ influence behavior, stakeholder management activities, and the project's contextual conditions. Prior stakeholder literature has rarely conceptualized the elements of stakeholder dynamics in a systematic manner.

Because of the rapidly changing nature of the health care environment, as well as conflicts and politics within their organizations, managers need to negotiate effectively with a wide range of other parties. Hospital managers should consider the relative importance of both the substantive and relationship outcomes of any negotiation. These two factors, when viewed both in terms of the priorities of the hospital executive and the other party may guide the executive's anticipation of negotiation scenarios and selection of appropriate negotiation strategies.

The modified Altman Z-score model uses multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) to examine multiple financial ratios simultaneously to assess a firm’s financial distress. This study utilized data from Medicare Cost Reports, LTCFocus, and the Area Resource File. Our sample consisted of 167 268 nursing home-year observations, or an average of 10 454 facilities per year, in the United States from 2000 through 2015. The independent financial variables, liquidity, profitability, efficiency, and net worth were entered stepwise into the MDA model. All of the financial variables, with the exception of net worth, significantly contributed to the discriminating power of the model. K-means clustering was used to classify the latent variable into 3 categorical groups: distressed, risk-of-financial distress, and healthy. These findings will provide policy makers and practitioners another tool ...

In this overview article, we identify the theoretical roots of the stakeholder concept and the current state of the field. We point to early proponents of stakeholder thinking. In addition, we point to recent concepts and developments outside the project management field that are relevant in the project management context; then, we introduce the articles included in the special issue; and, finally, we identify other relevant publications.

On one hand, hospitals have been adopting various clinical technologies to improve their clinical quality and financial performance. On the other hand, there is no comprehensive study that has examined the research evidence on the relationship between clinical high technology and hospital performance (clinical and financial). This systematic literature review attempts to account for the technology-performance link in US hospitals by focusing on clinical technologies and services. The review confirms the paucity of research on this topic and reveals that there are mixed findings across research studies. It also provides directions and recommendations for future research by identifying major gaps in the existing literature.

As integrated delivery systems/networks are formed, governance structures must be responsive to both internal and external stakeholders. Both internal efficiencies and socially responsible actions are required of these relatively new organizational forms. To meet these needs, a two-tier governance structure is presented that consists of overarching and facilitating boards.
