A music industry professional with experience as an Audio Engineer, Producer and in Music Business, Maarten holds several degrees including a Master of Arts (M.A.) focused in Carnival Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) in Performing Arts from The University of Trinidad and Tobago; and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Economics from The University of the West Indies.

Maarten is also the Managing Director of his own recording studio - Random Design Studios, as well as Director of Content Creation at the event and media company GSD Productions. His latest company – The Content Island Ltd, focuses on providing Caribbean royalty free content for content creators including music, sound effects and more. He has also served as Musical Director for Proscenium Productions staging of the musical productions 'Mamma Mia' and ‘The Wiz’ and served as Orchestra/Band leader in their productions of ‘Rent’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.

The street parade that forms the core of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Festival is usually comprised of 2 disparate but ever present forms of costumed masquerade. Stephen Derek passion, talent and motivation for the mas has secured him a place among the carnival greats and has allowed him to expand his brand all over the world yet the desire for this type of mas seems to be dwindling in Trinidad and Tobago. TRIBE’s business model is service first with little attention paid to the traditional aspects of mas with the focus on the business and the amazing services and breakthroughs in technologies that the band is responsible for. Traditional vs Technology is a recurring theme in Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival and here I examine it through the lens of Mas.

This study looks at the effect that the introduction of the Electric Guitar had on the recordings... more This study looks at the effect that the introduction of the Electric Guitar had on the recordings and performance of Trinidad’s Calypso music. The two-part study uses Alan Lomax’s Cantometrics as a foundation to ‘Kaisometrics’, which looks at features of influence from specific popular musical genres rather than vocal features in the Road March and Calypso Monarch Title holders from 1960 – 1980. The study also relies on the expertise and stories of various individuals involved in the Carnival musical landscape.
