Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology has known very divers receptions, depending on the intellectual contex... more Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology has known very divers receptions, depending on the intellectual contexts and periods of writing. Through a study of the prolific work of the author, this article aims at describing the different steps of this path, in order to grasp the process leading to such disparities. This analysis will try to explain the feeble reception of the thinker within the French intellectual sphere, as well as the several polemics engendered by his work in the English-speaking academic world. Lastly, this article would like to partially define the form and status of what the author has called ‘liquid sociology’ in recent years.

Bauman considers some central concepts of his thought, his main sources of critical inspiration, and his position on such contemporary phenomena as the rise of populism and terrorism in Europe and the consequent relationship between politics and insecurity.

This interview was actually conducted at two different occasions: the first one on the 10th of Ma... more This interview was actually conducted at two different occasions: the first one on the 10th of May 2015 and the second one the 10th of December of that same year. The final written interview respects the chronology of the questions asked in May and December. Both took place at Zygmunt Bauman’s house in the suburbs of Leeds. In these conversations with Simon Tabet, Bauman narrates important parts of his biographical and intellectual itineraries, from his formative years at the University of Warsaw, his Polish exile and final settlement in England, and how this influenced his sociological vision, as an “outsider”. Bauman considers some central concepts of his thought, his main sources of critical inspiration, and his position on such contemporary phenomena as the rise of populism and terrorism in Europe and the consequent relationship between politics and insecurity.

A partir de un estudio de la prolífica obra de Bauman, este artículo se propone describir las distintas etapas de ese itinerario, con el fin de comprender el proceso que condujo a tales disparidades. Este análisis tratará de explicar la tibia recepción del pensador en el ámbito intelectual francés, así como las polémicas que suscitó su trabajo en el mundo académico de habla inglesa. Por último, se busca definir parcialmente la forma y el estado actual de lo que Bauman llamó la “sociología líquida” en años recientes.

La versión final que aquí se transcribe respeta la cronología de las preguntas formuladas en mayo y diciembre. Ambas conversaciones tuvieron lugar en casa de Zygmunt Bauman, en los suburbios de Leeds. En estas conversaciones con Simon Tabet, Zygmunt Bauman narra partes importantes de su itinerario biográfico e intelectual, desde sus años de formación en la Universidad de Varsovia, su exilio de Polonia y final establecimiento en Inglaterra, y cómo esto influyó en su visión sociológica, como un outsider. Bauman abunda sobre algunos conceptos centrales de su pensamiento, sus principales fuentes de inspiración crítica y su postura respecto de fenómenos tan contemporáneos como el ascenso del populismo y del terrorismo en Europa y la relación consecuente entre política e inseguridad.
