Andrew Chen
I am broadly interested in the art and culture of the medieval and early modern periods. To date, much of my research has focused on questions of aesthetics, social function, and ritual use. I published my first book, on art and flagellation, in 2018. I have also written and co-written articles on painting, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and early writings on art.
I have an article forthcoming on a sixteenth-century response to Michelangelo's Last Judgment. I am currently working on a series of articles on allegory and other topics.
In 2020–21, I was CRIA Fellow at Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy. Since August 2021, I have been an assistant professor in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University.
