In spite of the fact that in the last decades the number of women who have decided to study in higher education institutions has been continuously increasing in all European countries, in engineering studies on the contrary, there are only 20 per cent of female students. Even though the percentage of the female and male students at engineering faculties in Slovakia was almost equal before 1989, the present situation is getting more and more similar to other European countries and number of female students in engineering studies has dropped significantly. The described facts led to the research, which is focused on the clarification of factors that contribute to the creation of the culture for women engineers that would positively influence the female decision regarding engineering as a profession. The following hypothesis has been tested: a friendly and warm atmosphere and culture, and non-existence of institutional barriers for female stud...

Community Strategic Planning produces a visionary statement of what the community wants to be 10 to 20 years in the future. There is no one ideal strategic planning process that has worked for all communities and community groups. Different communities have successfully used a variety of processes. The article describes methods important for evolvement of the situation analysis, particularly the method of representative public opinion survey that provides basis for SWOT analysis and formulation of the strategic goals. The method reflecting public’s attitudes, values, and beliefs regarding community development is demonstrated on the example of two cities located in the Eastern part of the Slovak Republic - Košice and Spišská Nová Ves. Key words: Community Strategic Planning, Community Needs Analysis, City and Place Marketing, Strategic Planning Methodology, Public Opinion Survey, Questionnaires design.

The creation of a regional innovation strategy is aimed to exchange experience among actors in regional structures and to stimulate regional policy making as regards research and innovation strategies by means of promoting cooperation, breaking down barriers, encouraging common regional learning and exploiting the existing capacities in a more efficient, integrated way. This is particularly true on the parallel background of regionalisation of innovation systems in the most European countries. Furthermore, former ideas of a success of innovation policies in developed countries and/or regions can be applied in lagging regions as well, taking into account special conditions and to fashion the regional strategy according to character of the region of consideration. The problems of regional and local developm...

This article is focusing on the classification of different factors related to economic inequality considering the maximum possible sample (167 countries of the world) in terms of availability of economic, social and political data. The cluster analysis allows a comparison of the 10 groups of countries ordered by the Gini coefficient with prevailing associated features of individual countries. In addition, the article examines the impact of three other, less considered factors - belonging to the wider supranational region, predominant religion in the country and the foremost climate present in the country. Each of the three factors relates partially to country membership in a group and existing inequality, although the only significant factor is climate.

Naturally, to bring back life to those historical relationships, building and maintaining spatial connections among those countries is necessary. Corresponding regions have similar economic problems that can hardly be solved at the national level. Therefore there must be a global interest of all involved countries to start. The future cross-border cooperation of the considered regions will possibly get a new quality in the new framework of European Union. Spatial and regional development of the eastern region of Slovakia together with north-east region of Hungary and south-east region of Poland is already a part of the European Spatial Development Perspective, adopted by the Ministers for Spatial Planning at the Potsdam Council on 10 and 11 May 1999. Government of Slovak Republic has approved a new project of building motorways and highways for the years 2001-2004. Particulary, building of th...

It means, the concept of innovations is true also for a sustainable development. The sustainability of the regional strategies is studied at the background of the regionalisation of the governance system. Particularly, the regions of Eastern Slovakia and Northern Hungary, both having a tradition of heavy industry, are studied in their cross-border innovation and sustainability context. The realization of the joined regional innovation strategy represents a unique opportunity to test and implement the RIS process in a cross-border environment. The main priority, renewable energy sources, results from the historical heavy industry path, the cross-border clusters and especially in. Those two sub-processes are supposed to have proper inputs and outputs and they are linked together by technological innovations (patents). In the article, the innovation efficiency of knowledge innovation process and its two sub-processes is measured by DEA modelling (data envelopment analysis) in the period of 2004-2010. Altogether, 19 countries of the European Union are studied, with a particular focus on the efficiency of innovation processes in the Visegrad countries which joined the EU in the same year 2004. Financial system is one of the major factors which determine the innovative activities of actors. The aim of article is to uncover slacks (surpluses) on the input and output side of knowledge processes. It can be supposed that the largest slacks exist on the side of the financial support in relation to produced innovative outputs. The DEA method shows that majority of countries reach higher relative innovation efficiency in knowledge commercialization than in knowledge production and the most important slacks can be found in financing of research and development. Findings also suggest that although the efficiency of innovation processes would have been expected higher in the old EU member countries, their efficiency is lower than in some of the Visegrad countries. The reason may be the ability of the Visegrad countries to generate relatively satisfactory outputs from low inputs compared with other countries. Surprisingly, they are also in a group of high performers in bringing innovations to market, although they show substantial deficiencies in generating patents and papers.

The objective function to be minimized is equal to the maximum difference in the distance from a demand point to its farthest and nearest facility (balancing function). It is assumed that any facility has at most m of possibilities for its location. For m = 2, the computational complexity of the problem is O(np log p), where n is the number of demand points and p is the number of located facilities. For m > 2, the problem is NP -hard. Similar results are presented for boolean and strongly boolean versions of the problem.
