This evaluation is reassessed in the context of an analysis of Wilkes's collaboration with Charles Churchill on the North Briton and his political writings of the period, in particular his Introduction to the History of England (1768). Furthermore, Wilkes enjoyed extensive and prolonged contact with the leading continental philosophes of the period, and in particular d'Holbach, Diderot, Suard, Helvétius, and Chastellux, which is reflected in their correspondence and political writings. Wilkes was a cosmopolitan figure whose political thought, while rooted in Lockean ideas, was convergent with that of contemporary philosophes and justify considering him as a principled defender, in his public life, of liberterian rather than libertine values.

However, it is argued that the normative status of international fundamental rights in Union law is undermined by the pursuit of the objective of autonomy of Union law and deficiencies in the legal mechanisms for giving effect to those rights. In Part One, it assesses the deficiencies of the pre-Lisbon system. In particular it analyses the negative consequences for legitimacy arising from the restrictions on justiciability in respect of pre-Lisbon JHA measures in light of case law of the ECJ and the European Court of Human Rights. In Part Two, it outlines the genesis and substance of the reforms in the Treaty of Lisbon, including a summary of the transitional regime that will to apply to the jurisdiction of the ECJ over the pre-Lisbon acquis. In conclusion, the Article assesses the effectiveness of the Treaty of Lisbon jurisdictional reforms from the perspective of compliance with the rule of law.

While scripted many years earlier, the two films address themes later developed in Ma mère rit and Une famille à Bruxelles, notably Akerman's intense relationship with her mother and the trauma of the Shoah. The article outlines the key elements of the two films and autobiographical works and then explores a number of shared themes between the films and autobiographical writings. Firstly, it analyses the two films in the context of Ivonne Margulies' identification of "hindered communication" as a key feature in both films. It next develops an analysis of the privileged role Akerman attributes to communication within the family. The traumatic and pervasive influence of the Shoa in Akerman's films and autobiographical works is then examined in the context of her mother's history as a survivor of the camps. The article then contextualises Akerman's use of the French language in the context of Deleuze and Guattari's theory of a minor literature. Akerman's treatment of the notion of home and her usage of Freudian themes-the oedipal complex, the incest taboo and mother-daughter ambivalence-is examined with examples from both Jeanne Dielman and Meetings with Anna. In conclusion, the value of a reading of Akerman's autobiographical works, Une famille à Bruxelles (1998) and Ma mère rit, is highlighted as a means of furthering an understanding of Jeanne Dielman and Meetings with Anna.
