While stories about criminals offered a certain entertainment value to readers, this entertainment juxtaposed with both psychological and moral aspects of 18 th century quotidian life rendered a more believable, relatable and memorable tale. As Sharpe notes, Friedrich Schiller used in Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre several "familiar themes and motifs, some of them, like the theme of fraternal enmity, revived by the Sturm und Drang, produced something both new and disturbingly radical in feeling" in order to capture his reader's thoughts and perspectives (Sharpe 10). Furthermore, Hart argues that, "Schiller devises a murder that must be seen as just that and then explained via psychology and the effects of trauma" (Hart 117). That is: The details of the actual crime committed in the story are not as important as the details leading up to the crime, and the traumatic events that the main character endures, which lead to a life of "Ehrlosigkeit," the loss of honor (Koopmann 702).
