We've been getting a ton of spam calls lately which were truly annoying. Then I remembered putting our phone numbers on the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry. They say you only have to do it once, BUT I figured I'd do it again. Here's the link.
https://www.donotcall.gov/register.html
This is what you'll see.
I clicked on Register Your Phone and registered our home and cellphones.
I then received an email telling me my numbers were now registered. I could swear I've done this before.
There was just one call today from Lihue, Kauai which was suspicious. I know my cousins would just text me so it couldn't be them. Whatever the case, the phone stopped ringing after two rings.
Friends have told me that they don't answer the phone unless they recognize the name or let the answering machine pick up the message. We get calls from Tripler Army Hospital or Kaiser pharmacy that's not identified so I do pick up quite a few calls because it's miserable to do a call back at times. Tripler has the worst phone system.
Anyway, I just thought I'd give you the link in case you haven't done this. Fingers crossed that it works for you. The silence is lovely at our house.
HEADER FIX:
People have wondered how I fixed my header photo without my techie son-in-law (who is unable to visit because of COVID). I don't know. I was doing what I normally do every few days to see if it would be fixed and one day it was just magically back to normal. I'd written to the Blog Helpline but I don't know if someone magically came and fixed it.
Mage (Postcards) and her husband searched out the answer and she posted the solution on her blog. Here's the link:
You can see Mage's careful directions.
I was too nervous to check it out, but this morning, I gritted my teeth and did it.
She said the numbers should be between 500 to 1000. Mine was already set at 570 for the display height and 1357 for the width.
Soooo... perhaps the Blogger fairy godmother came and changed it for me while I was asleep.
But do I dare change my header photo yet?
Canada has a Do Not Call program, too. Sadly, it doesn't apply if it is a charity, especially if you've donatd to them!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered it’s the same for us.
DeleteMy phone company has a recording that comes on and says this number doesn't accept unsolicited calls, please dial one if you wish to talk to this residence. IT works. That's our land line, my iphone i use robotkiller-works great takes a message if the caller isn't in my contact list.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kay, I just canceled my landline service this past weekend (am relying solely on my mobile number now). I wasn't sure it would let me register it as a replacement, but it just did. :^) As for that blog-banner info, I'm glad it worked out for you but until they fix it on their template end, "if my blog ain't broke I'm not fixin' it!"
ReplyDeleteYou would think a ginormous company like Google (which owns Blogger) would devote 15 minutes to restoring the Template Designer like it was before!
We only give out our landline phone and we never answer it. If anyone calls us, they have to leave a message and we check it every so often and maybe a few times a year actually get a message that needs a response. 99.9% of the calls are hangups. If someone is trustworthy, I do give them my cell number and tell them to call me on that versus my landline. I also have my cellphone set up so unless I have your contact information, it goes directly to voicemail. This prevents those (dial every number) robocalls from occasionally getting through.
ReplyDeleteAfter you first posted about Do Not Call list I did that. I even entered my cell phone number. Still get those calls on both phones.
ReplyDeleteI looked at direction to change header and decided to wait a bit. Too complicated to deal with right now.
Yes, but follow the instructions.
ReplyDeleteI signed my mom up for the Do Not Call but she continues to get tons of spam calls. She likes to entertain herself by "playing" with the callers or giving them h*ll, so perhaps that's a blessing. I'm glad your template is fixed. I wonder if I should fiddle with mine.
ReplyDeleteI'm of the group that won't answer if I don't know them and let my answering machine screen the rest. I had noticed now that the scammers will use a number that is from your immediate area. Clever rascles but I still don't bite.
ReplyDeleteI will try redoing the Do Not Call List. We did it a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteMy cell phone rings when our land line does and my cell give me the message "Scam Likely" many times a day. We don't usually answer unidentified numbers, but then I missed an important call, so I have picked up more often lately.
I have not experienced any header problems.
We get many telemarketers from time to time. Our phone registry is a joke . It doesn't work. We use call identification.
ReplyDeleteI seemed to have a reprieve from those nuisance calls for a while, but they have ramped upa gain. I know I had Do Not Call for my landline but now I just have the cell. I will give that a try. I most often do not answer my phone unless the caller is identified or I recognize the number.
ReplyDeleteI get so many spam calls but I usually am not near my phone so I don't answer them. It drives my kids nuts because I don't get their calls. I just don't want to be tied to and dependent upon my cell phone.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these details.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I let everything go to voicemail.
ReplyDeleteDon't change your photo; the one you have is lovely. Perfect.
ReplyDeleteI usually re-register my cell number every year. I don't answer calls unless I know who they are. If someone is trying to reach me, or a new contact I made, they have to leave a message. I tell folks, "leave a message or I'll block your number." If they don't, I block the number. Somehow, I received 23 unknown calls one Sunday afternoon within 5 hours. Read where junk calls are increasing due to more people staying at home due to covid. I even have a local K.C. doctor office that confirms appointments with some unidentified company that has a blasted California number. I let it leave a message, then call them back. I sometimes miss the olden days where we got up from the living room to answer the phone on a wall, and there seemed to be fewer evil calls. Linda in Kansas, where we can use 2 tin cans with a taunt string to make a call....
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting the header fix out for those of us who might one day want to change it and work through all those arcane numbers and so forth. :-)
ReplyDeleteI like your header image.
